NOX Sensors

Just wondering if anyone else has seen a rebate like this yet??? I have had my 2011 Chevy Duramax 2500 for just over a year and in this past year I have had to get both of the NOX sensors replaced, note I have 128K on it so I figured they just wore out... Today in the mail I got a rebate letter from GM saying to fill it out and take it and the receipts to the dealer I had do the service if I have ever had to replace my NOX sensors. It stated there is a problem with the wiring causing them to fail and I would be reimbursed the expenses. I was just wondering if anyone else has seen anything like this or if there are things that would disqualify me from this before I get too excited to get my 700+ dollars back and add another camp trip to this summer..

Friend of mine just had to have his NOX sensor replaced. He has a 2011 Ford 1 ton with just over 40000 miles.

Under the right conditions the NOx sensor manufacturing process would allow for internal contamination of the sensor. The manufacturing process has since been changed, now using laser welding vs. spot welding.

Beltzy, call GM customer service and have them look up the records for the service. They always write down your mileage so there will be proof that you were under the 125000 mile limit.

I'm glad GM has this finally figured out! My '11 has had the "poor DEF" message 3 times now. They replaced one of the NOX sensors last time. I asked if they replace both and was told "no, only one was bad". It is only a matter of time and I'll be back in for the other.

When vehicles with catalytic converters first appeared the oxygen sensors had a short life and were expensive to replace. But I have not had to replace on in a vehicle in the past 20 years so I assume they got better. I expect the same with the NOx sensors. I had one go out in my 2011 Duramax before it go to 10,000 miles.

It took trips to 3 different dealers to get it correctly diagnosed and repaired. My symptoms were erratic error messages as to mile left before needing to add DEF, i.e. going into limp mode, and greatly increased DEF consumption. The computer was not getting the right reading from the NOx sensor and so it would cause more and more DEF to be injected into the exhaust stream.

When the sensor was replaced the mechanic also re-routed the wiring. The factory had put the wiring so that a section lay on the EGR body which gets very hot, and another section was resting on the AC compressor.

Call GM customer service, I am sure they will goodwill that for you. Doesn't hurt to ask....

I just called GM and they told me to go to the dealership for reimbursement.

Thanks BELTZY for posting this.

Bummer indeed. Sorry to hear that. At the same time, and for what it is worth, I've been hearing that a lot of manufacturers have been having trouble with NOx sensors, it's not just a GM problem.

GM extended the warranty on the NOx sensors to 10years. 2011 model years were notorious for NOx sensors going bad giving "POOR DEF quality" message in DIC.
