Heck, several years back when my mom got older, she left the car running, with the keys in it, in the driveway many times. She lived a couple hours away from me. When I went to visit her one time, her next door neighbor stopped me when I first arrived at her house to tell me he walked over and shut off her car several times---with the keys in it. She simply 'forgot' to shut it off. That vehicle had keys!!
It was the beginning signs that it was time for mom to a) stop driving and b) to stop living on her own.
It never would have occurred to me to sue someone because my elderly mother was becoming 'less aware' and forgetful!!! Ridiculous!!!

I don't think the car manufacturers were trying to conceal anything, I think they just couldn't conceive of anyone being that dumb. They've been proven wrong!

Let's face it, if we're that concerned about a senior citizen not hearing the car running and leave it on as a previous poster suggests, they should probably bad giving up their license.

Well, I'm no tech genius, and we saw a few of this 'key-less fobs' when shopping an SUV recently.

We thought the engine shut off if the car doors locked, or if the key-less do-hickey got more than ten feet away. But we never even considered that it might not shut off.

When we test drove a new Ford Escape ,the salesman had the FOB when we drove off , and other then the warning that the FOB left the vehicle we were able to drive away on a test drive with the FOB ,and the salesman at the dealership.

Just checked my 2014 Ram ,you can walk way from it running, and it continues to run. Never have thought that they would shut off unless done manually.

I personally don't see what the issue is ,you either push the button to turn off the engine or you turn the key off to turn off the engine. What difference does it make how the engine is turned off, if you don't the same results are going to happen

My Ram has the key-less-do-hickey.

There are only two ways it will shut off.

1) you do it yourself.

or

2) leave it running, and it will run as long as there is fuel, no matter how far away the key fob is. BUT, should someone get into the vehicle without the key fob being present, and try to put the vehicle from Park into gear, the vehicle shuts off.

During cold winter months up here in the north country, I leave mine running and locked, while I go into quick stops and other stores. Key fob is with me of course.

Onto topic at hand, these suits are really stupid. Yes, I can see the point where the sound of the engine is so quiet, folks don't realize the car is still running, but come on. You DON'T leave an engine running in an enclosed space.

Past technology you turned the key. So now just push the stupid button. Simplicity and common sense.

Its easy to dismiss the claims, however when you consider that most new cars are so quiet many older individuals cannot hear them, combined with a non-intuitive operating parameter that allow the engine to run when you take the "key" (or in this case a fob) out of the vehicle, it puts people at risk.

Would you want to lose your parent or grandparent because they are caught up on technology? From a Human Factors standpoint, the current systems in many cars most definitely increase the probability of somebody making a potentially fatal error.

OMG: A internet abbreviation that has managed to break communication boundaries and is spoken by some in public.
Simply put OMG means, Oh my god!

OMG: Acronym. Generally "Oh my God!" For some people that don't like taking the Lord's name in vain, "Oh my gosh!" For Googlists, "Oh my Google!"

Yep. It really doesn't matter how you start your vehicle. If you leave it in an enclosed garage, lethal fumes will collect.

From the Article:
The suit alleges that automakers concealed the risks of carbon monoxide poisoning in more than five million vehicles equipped with keyless ignition systems. If a car engine is left running in an enclosed space when their drivers walk away with the keyless remote on their persons, the exhaust fumes could prove deadly, with 13 deaths in the U.S. reportedly attributed to the circumstances when vehicles were left running inside garages attached to homes.

We need a lot more chlorine in the gene pool to cull the herd.
