Predictions for the one ton diesel HD shootout

So the 3/4 ton gassers have been tested and the ratings compiled and argued about. Next week, the 3500/350 series diesel portion will come out. This is not a brand loyalty test, just how you think Pickuptrucks.com will rate them. Let's see who can guess correctly.

Here's my prediction:

1. Ford
2. Ram
3. Chevy/GMC

You are correct!

Don't forget the Aisin trans is a true medium duty and not de-neutered like the Allison in the GM's.

I am not necessarily doubting your numbers but I would like to know where you get them from. I would think the three diesel pick up truck engines will outlast the trucks they are put in in 99% of the cases. Very few people actually wear out an engine regardless of whether it is a Cummins diesel or a KIA gas engine. As for the transmissions I have seen ratings suggesting the Aisin and Allison are both rated for about 850 lbft of torque. Ford rates theirs considerably higher (1400 lbft) yet they all three weigh about the same and you seldom hear of any failing transmissions in the new diesels.

ON EDIT:

Ratings I saw on the Aisin were 850-950ftlb of TQ, It already has 850ftlb of TQ coupled with the Cummins....The 68RFE is a light duty tranny with 800ftlb of TQ and the Aisin is again, a medium tranny and seeing as how I'm keeping it stock, I should be good:)

But as you've stated, I don't read on these or other forums about the Big Three's tranny's wearing out and breaking down with alarming frequency...., going by what I've seen and read of course..

Actually he is not correct. GM used the 6.6 in medium duty trucks. I have one in my 5500. Allison is de-neutered? Interesting.

Yes, the Allison in the pickup line is not the same as in the Medium Duty application. The duty cycle of the Cummins is around 350K and the GM and Ford are around 250K.

If neuter means to castrate and de-neuture is the antithesis then is the allison a eunuch or simply did not, not get castrated.

Good one!

Got that one from my Dad. He always called the 2nd gen Dodge's with a V10 "de-neutered".

I am sure someone with more specific knowledge will clarify what I am saying about the light/HD allison application.

They are good not saying they are not but not the same as Many Medium Duty applications.

The Allison in my 5500 is a 1000 series same as in the pickups. The only difference that I am aware of is a deeper pan for more fluid. After 10 years of hard pulling, the only issue has been a new flex plate last year. After all the years that Duramax has been teamed with an Allison, you hear of very few issues with the de-neutered Allison. When you do, it is most always due to a "chipped" Duramax.

How does one get a light duty engine in a medium duty truck? :h
