RAM Megacab

Hey All,

Been trying to decide between the Big 3 and while I like the Dodges, I didn't like the way that the middle portion of the back seat has an indention so it's really not a true 3 person seat. I have 3 girls and I need actual full seats for the long road trips, hence the reason I was leaning towards the Fords. I found out that the Megacabs have a true bench back seat.

My question is with the Megacabs (as I can't recall seeing any in my RV park travels) is there any issue with 5th wheels and clearance? I know that they have 6 ft. beds and there shouldn't be an issue but I figured I would ask the dumb question.

We haven't purchased our 5th wheel yet and while I know they now make 5th wheels made for short beds, better safe than sorry.

Thanks in advance!

Incredible! Truck purchase based on center section of rear seat! Pampered kids for sure. My kids got to sit on a full bench with Mom and Dad in a single cab C20.

BTW there is nothing wrong with the center seating. 3 kids, rotate em.

And somehow the three kids, or three adults that happen to ride in the rear seat do not deserve the great creature comforts that you get to enjoy in that Ram that you claim to have the BEST seats in the world, I guess at least the two buckets in the front are okay, who cares how comfortable the people in the back are

Unbelievable you can make that statement, who gives a rats what YOUR kids had to sit on.

No problems with clearance here. I have too have 3 kids and they all fit in the back with their stuff.
I love the Megacab and if I were to get another RAM, it'd definately be another Megacab.

I thought it was different than my crew. The chassis cabs don't offer a Mega Cab, so I didn't pay much attention to their configuration.

Wonder why Dodge still uses leafs in the 3500? I mean, if coils are just as good...

The crew cab has a full length hump and the mega has a partial hump.

Does the Mega Cab still have the transmission hump in the center like the crew? My Ford had a flat floor in the rear which made it easier on the middle seat passenger.

When it comes to the crew cab, it's pretty difficult to put a car seat in the rear middle seat because of the cutout. The front of the car seat is unsupported because of the missing section so the seat just falls forward. Also you can't use the latch system in that seat since there no anchors in that position. With the Mega Cab you get a full seat and all 3 sets of anchors so you can put the seats in wherever you want to.

I would also be cognizant of the fact that FCA employs coil springs on the rear axles of the 1500 and 2500 Full size trucks. Only the 3500 series have leaves.

Coils are fine for ride quality, not so good for towing.

BS.
Many here will recall my testing and measurements that proved otherwise.

This is horse leftovers. My truck is a great tow vehicle all the way up to the axle ratings.

Well, when you say it that way... 😄 You and I see the world through the same lens.

I can see both sides of this argument, and the OP is certainly welcomed to spend his money how ever he wants. We're currently shopping for a tow vehicle ourselves, and constrained by the floor of the cab for our 2 rottweilers (who are better behaved than most kids these days). That's a far cry from my childhood, when we rode in the covered bed of a pickup on 2000 mile trips, and thought that was the coolest thing ever. Of course, we weren't pulling a FW.

Good luck to the OP on his search.

Where did you find the second quote above with my handle on it? I did not write that.

When I seen it, it had IdaDs sig and pic at the bottom.

OP your getting lots of ignor.....er' misinfo here from some.

One person says the Mega Cab has low gvwr numbers.
2500 truck has 10000 gvwr same as the crew cab.
3500 srw Mega has 12300 gvwr vs 3500 srw crew cab 11500 gvwr
3500 drw Mega cab has the same 14000 gvwr as a crew cab.

....or another tries to tell us the 2500 mega with coil springs isn't so good for towing.
As you see Actual owners tell us different.
Another member IB516 has a write up showing his impressions with his then new '14 2500 Ram with coil springs vs his '07 3500 srw with leaf springs towing his 37' 12k 5th wheel trailer. He posts on occasion and may make a reply for you.

Another says the Mega "eats up payload".
The Mega is 168 lbs heavier on the rear axle than a crew cab so instead of a 3840 lb payload in the bed the Mega has 168 lbs less. That means leaving the Rotty at home.

I have the same 6' 4" short bed Dodge/Cummins and pull a old '97 flat profile/square corner 32' 11200 lb 5er...and yes this combo need a slider.
As you say the new gen 5ers with the notched/rounded front corners eliminate the need for a slider.
Or you can go with a Anderson hitch...or the same style PullRite ISR Superlite series....or a Reese Sidewinder pin box setup.
Don't waste money on a slider if the combo doesn't need one

2014 DRW 3500 mega cab here. Pulls our 16,000 lb Fuzion just fine. Payload is over 5600 lbs. Can't remember the exact amount. The rear seat is awesome. I do have a slider hitch and highly recommend one.

I put 3 kiddos on long road trips in the back seat of my F250 crew cab.

No problem. Plenty of room for all their DVDs, books and stuff.

The center section has the arm rest that folds into the back of the seat, doesn't bother anybody. In fact, they didn't even realize it was there the first road trip.

I looked at the Mega Cab when I was shopping. Looked nice, but it was pricey, mostly because it was not available in the configuration I wanted. Most Mega Cabs were all fancy luxury models, which I had no need for or wanted to pay for.

Plus, it eats up the payload of the truck like crazy.

Hey there Spoon....The statement about Sidecar being ignorant was uncalled for. Everyone is entitled to their option, even you. If you actually knew Sidecar, you would realize he knows what he is talking about.

His statement, " Coils are fine for ride quality", is a true statement. The part of his statement, "not so good for towing", is also accurate and in a later post of Sidecar's, he gives facts to support his statement.

All goes back to being a little more patient with another person's ideas, driving, or actions. Won't hurt you and you'd be wiser for doing it.

My opinion. Worth what you paid for it!

Lakeside

I'm sorry if it offended you, but I stand by my statement. There is absolutely nothing about Ram's coil suspension that make it any worse for towing. He offered zero fact, just an opinion. In his follow-up statement, he clearly backtracks from his opinion by saying, and I quote, "Consrquently, it's a tossup" when discussing the differences between coils and leaf's. If its a "toss up", than how is one empirically better than the other?

By definition, his original and follow up statements are wrong... or ignorant of the truth.

I stand by it. An opinion is an opinion. He stated information as fact, which it isn't...
