Ram tire size

It's time to buy new tires for our 2016 Ram 2500. Currently, the size is 275/70/18 Firestone with a street tread. I wanted to jump up one size in width, but was told a 285 is really expensive.
Anyone on here running 295/70/18 on their Ram with stock rims?

That's the same tire I went with.

My experience is on a '18 Duramax 3500 and I run that size tire in a NITTO EXO Grappler. My MPG took a good hit when I went to that size. They look awesome and they are excellent offroad and in snow, but it is no free ride. I know the truck is different, but you may see some of the same drawbacks. If your running 4:10's that would certainly help, but if your running a taller gear set, it will become more so with the 285's. I think I will mount up the 275's next time and see how they look and decide, it would not break my hear to go back to the 275's. I paid 1300 for the Nitto's in 285.

The ridge grapplers are excellent off road, but unless you're off road regularly, they are far too aggressive for a tow rig.

Our Firestones are just about to the wear bars at under 28,000 miles. I suspected they were short lived due to the trailer towing we've done.
Thanks to all that came back to this. Time to go shopping....

Rim width...

A lot depends on your driving style, where you drive, how you drive, etc, etc

All tire specifications has a recommended rim width. From narrowest to widest and all of their published performance data based on them

Tires are the first defense before the shocks come into play. Tires have more than just weight carrying duties. Cornering, braking, steering, handling (curves, slalom, dampening, etc) and any combo or combo of them all at any given time

OEMs typically have the narrowest rim width for the tires they list on their vehicle specifications. Reason is that 'ride quality' is Paramount to their majority of customers

It has to do with sidewall static "bend back" and dynamic "roll over". Narrower rim per tire section width, will have more sidewall "roll over" and "bend back", so the tire takes the bumps by bending the sidewall even more during dynamic whatever's. Plus will have the highest slip angle, even when aired up to max sidewall listed PSI

Wider will have less "bend back" and "roll over". Plus will have a smaller slip angle and reduced 'ride quality'

Mine is 10" bead to bead on purpose. Want to reduce as much as possible: "side wall bend back", "roll over" and smallest slip angle. It does ride like a truck or track vehicle, but that is what I want and like. Ride quality is NOT on my 'Have to have list' and towards the bottom of my 'nice to have list'

All of this discussion goes toward re-engineering your suspension system...if you go out side of the OEM's recommended spec for wheels and tires, so read up on the HOW2's and effects there of...

I can't comment on the size you need but will tell you the Firestone Transforce tires that came with my 2016 2500 Ram CTD were the worst original tires I ever owned on a new vehicle. Got a whopping 24,000 miles out of them and then they were shot.

Interesting you mentioned that. At 16000 miles I noticed my factory Transforce looking really worn. The wear bars aren't showing yet but jeeze.

They are hot garbage. I bailed on mine around 18k.

Seeing that you have the Hemi, I do not know what axle ratio you have, however you may want to consider what a larger tire is going to do be your towing performance and hitch height.

If it was a tall geared diesel with the 68RFE tranny, it would not be a good thing if towing.

I went from Transforce AT's to Michelin LTX Defenders, and like them. They are wearing much better than the AT's.

I run a 285/70/18 on a 2016 cummins 2500. I would like a narrower tire. Hard to find for me . So many options.

Iโ€™ve run lots of 295 tires on 8โ€ rims. Itโ€™s as wide as Iโ€™d go on that rim width.
Some will say too wide, recommended min rim width is likely a bit wider.
Last set of 295s on 8โ€ rims carried the AF camper to and all around Alaska.
Bigger issue may be rubbing in the front wheel wells. Depending on tread/brand and the situation Iโ€™d expect there may be minor rubbing on full lock steering if no leveling kit.
