Sooooo... Do you lock your door?

Well, do you..? when traveling down the road.



When traveling, we're in and out of the camper often. Locks are honest people deterrents, but we do use them when we go in the store, leave the camp site, etc. Never had a door open when we've forgotten to lock them, so just picking the brains of the many out of curiosity.

It is amazing what one can learn here:

A few have guns stored in their camper.... if they aren't home they are an easy mark... they'll just shoot your dog.

I would suggest that folks don't advertise their "hobbies" using decals in the windows.

Janet and I followed a very small van through Oak Ridge within the last week.... it has the rear window covered with decals... Sig Sauer, Colt, Winchester, Taurus, etc.... probably 40 decals. Why would the owner do it? Was I impressed? ... or did I think he was about as stupid as they get.

If the bad guy wants a large or valuable collection who will he follow home...? if he going to rob someone of valuable guns will he just do a home invasion and shoot the braggart that advertized it or will he do a home invasion of some one that he isn't sure of them having anything at all?

I personally think that a person is very intellegent to minimize any show of possesions or wealth in or around your truck camper or your home.

Janet and I will admit to having a huge T shirt collection from all over North America... most people are too big to wear our clothes though....

"Sleepy" is a safe name.... it doesn't tell much.

I thought about "horney" but there was a waitng list for it. Now I'm too old to change it.... I really am sleepy most of the time.

Folks....I do wonder if many of us have the same "opinions" as I have,
But....while traveling in Canada,(B.C.) 4 times I had someone try to rob us of fishing gear, and once of camping stuff. So, if someone is looking to do this...beware of the sound of a 12 gauge ****ing!

I do lock our back door so the dogs don't get out,when we travel down the road,and if I am not there....DO NOT try to open the door....the dogs DO dislike being disturbed! ( 2 are over 60 lbs, and of course...1 is an ankle biter)

lmao...great response. Sleepy has lot's of good information and has almost as many opinions as I. But he should get more than one alias; perhaps Grumpy, and then put in for Happy (we all have to aim for something).

Actually, I agree in spirit; I'm amazed at what folks post that is really private. My question here was literally about locking while driving down the road. Not to personal in my book, but alas, one can always decline to respond.

If you were to ask 100 thieves, I bet 99 of them would say they'd rather go through an unlocked door than a locked door. I'd also bet they didn't pick only one vehicle in their lifetime to steal from, but rather, they tried more than one door and chose the unlocked one most of the time.

I have a padlock on the door when travelling. Mainly to stop someone attempting to open the door 'for a laugh' while stopped in traffic or similar. Or to stop casual attempts at thefts. We only park at the sort of places where someone noisily hammering at a lock would be noticed. It has a rough and ready look to it - the DIY look implies I don't have much money, hence nothing worth stealing.

At home we leave the camper unlocked.

When in the camper we have a bolt we slide across. Someone would make a lot of noise attempting to force the door with the bolt in place.

I had a Lance 185 that I had to lock the door while traveling because it would always swing open. This 825 stays shut, but I lock it anyways so if I make a stop it's secured while I'm away.

I never understood the saying "it just keeps honest people honest" when talking about taking safety precautions.

About 30% of burglaries are committed by thieves going through open/unlocked doors or windows. Locking your door does a lot more than "keep honest people honest". That's 30% of burglaries that could have been avoided with a simple twist of the wrist action...

We lock the door any time we're a distance from the TC and definitely during travel.

Can't make it too easy for thieves.
