Tow weight

I am thinking about upgrading to a Grand Rapids TT with a UVW of 8348lbs. I drive a 2009 F150 shorted crew cab with a tow rating of 9500. Equipped with tow package. Hitch says 11,500. Need some opinions, am I pushing it. Thank you in advance.

Not even close!
You will use at least 500-600# of that with occupants, full tank of fuel, WD hitch and other "stuff.
At 1191# of payload you really do have a "Half ton" (Well, just slightly more but not much!).
If you plan to do more than very short local trips a MUCH lighter trailer is needed I'm afraid. You need a LOADED hitch weight around 600#, which translates to approx a 5000# GVWR trailer.

๐Ÿ™‚ Hi, it seems as though a full tank of gas is included and not part of the payload.
Nope, Payload is GVWR minus DRY weight, no fuel.

8300 pound dry is more than I recommend for nearly any half ton, and yours is not the most capable. 6k dry is a good target assuming you have enough payload for family and 800 pounds of TW. Is your family under 400 pounds? I think you may need to replace the truck first with a focus on that payload.

I use a F150. They are great TVs IF you stay in your capacities. However. You need more truck for that trailer.

Your tongue weight alone is likely to max that weight out if not exceed it. Our TT is around 8500-9000 lbs. depending on how heavy we pack and the tongue weight can flucuate between 1200-1300 lbs or so.

Then you add in passengers, and ANYTHING else not part of the truck itself.

50% of that will be gone before you hook up the trailer and another 100% will be used up by the trailer. That equals 150% of capacity, which is too much for me.

I'd bet you'd be over GVWR/payload with my #5000 TT.. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I know, because I was with my old 97 F150 by a good amount towing that same #5000 TT... ๐Ÿ™‚

I wouldn't even tow that trailer with my 13 F150 MaxTow equipped rig.. Doubt I'd even do it with an HD payload version either..

Of course, that's just my opinion, and I towed with that 97 F150 and #5000 TT for over 12 years and had no problems...

But, that's just way too much trailer for any year F150 IMO..

Good luck!

If you are just towing to a local campground, you may get by with that trailer.

It will obviously be over payload, close on RAWR, and I don't think a 5.4 will be very happy pulling it very far.

I would suggest something much lighter, if towing any distance. You are really short on payload, with that truck.

Yep, forget the tow rating.... be more aware of the payload, RAWR, and the GVWR of the truck. If you can stay under those three (all three), you should be fine.

I would guess that a trailer with a UVW of 8348 will weigh somewhere in the neighborhood of at least 9500 lbs loaded. This computes to a tongue weight of around 1050 lbs.

What is the payload capacity of your 150?

UVW of 8348lbs.
Can't imagine that you won't be a good bit over you PAYLOAD once you are loaded and trip ready.

As they say, "Pulling it is not the problem, it's carrying it that is."

Hopefully others that tow with a F150 will give you a more optimistic answer.
