Toyota fake 3/4 ton spotted, overheated

We were on our way out of the Jug Hollow camping site on Flaming gorge a couple of days ago when we ran into a traffic jam on the 5 mile dirt road into the area. A bit unusual.

Turns out some people with a new Toyota p/u one of those that claim to be 3/4 ton, was over heating on the hills (sic) pulling a very big TT. These 'hills' are the usual short ups and downs you find on many gravel roads. A hundred yards of up slope maybe. The driver insisted it was a 3/4 ton when someone suggested getting a real truck. It was a long, at least 35 ft TT tho, even with a real HD p/u he may have been overloaded but not overheated.

he finally managed to pull it forward far enough that p/u's could get by him. They were gone when we returned.

Sounds like all the drivers there were dooshes too like the guys on this forum beating their chests about HD trucks.
Ever occur to anyone that he just had a problem? You know, sometimes vehicles break down?

^^^ This. One of my personal biases is to always have a truck that is spec'd to pull my load and a bit more. Nevertheless, on NEW tow vehicles, I've had manufacturer-caused failures on a couple of new Fords and at least one Chevrolet....and my BIL had his 3500 Ram blow off a cooling hose 50 miles after break-in while towing a 10' trailer with a garden tractor on it. Schtuff happens.

FWIW, due to one of the problems mentioned above, I had to use my Toyota Sequoia to haul a trailered boat...about 15 - 20% over the combined weight limit. It towed fine without blowing up even though I'd guess the Sequoia is a "fake" 1/2 ton.

My uncle had one of those and towed a couple of different TT's with it, although I think it was more of a mid to late 80's vintage. He never had trouble with it although he wouldn't win any races. It did have pretty stiff springs and a rough ride.

I felt sorry for the guy I was just surprised to see that obviously brand new truck overheated on a little pimple of a hill. As for towing I was at the tail end of three of four others and it never occurred to me to try to pull his truck and giant TT. Or it did but there was nowhere in sight a place to tow him to on that narrow single lane road.

I suspect that he was guilty of actually believing a truck dealer when he asked him "can that truck pull my very long TT?"

Anybody remember the Jeep Comanche? They had a Metric Ton package for that as well. Great truck.

It happens all the time. 😞

Unfortunately. More and more on this forum. When I joined there was a lot less of the bashing and more of the helping. It's too bad. 😞

I suppose we never see and F150s, Silverados, Sierras or RAMs sitting on the side of the road overheated or broken down. Lots of reasons for this to happen to any vehicle even a car that is not towing anything. Guess just need to bash some guys bad luck at the side of the road.

Looked at a few of the cab and chassis dually Toyotas. Those were good rigs for the chassis size they were etc. Probably still sell if you could get one.
As far as original truck issue.....not the first time a new rig did not have an issue from factory.

Looks like decent specs.
My 2500HD is rated to tow the same amount.

2020 Toyota Tundra
Towing capacity: 8,800 to 10,200 lbs
Horsepower: 381 hp

I remember back in the 70's working at a Ford dealership when the parts department had to go pick up pallets of antifreeze or other heavy items they always took the little Courier pickup because it handled the weight a lot better than their F-150 short bed.

I’m interested in what you mean by this comment.

Remember when they put duallies and an oversize Class C on them?

I still see the occasional one going down the road, looking like it's ready to tip over....

So did you see steam and massive loss of coolant? Or does overheat mean just the transmission got to the yellow zone and he pulled over to cool down?
