Trailer Life Article - 5.9 Cummins engine

This months Trailer Life Magazine had a write up on the 5.9 Cummins engine, the write up covered at least 6 or 7 pages.

As I read the article all 5.9 Cummins engine block coolant plugs rust out. The article did not place our truck engines in a very good light.

I had the coolant changed in my 2005 dodge diesel truck at 5 year intervals with Dodge approved antifreeze and distilled water.

So far, I have had no problems with the cooling system. However, after reading the article I will keep a bit closer eye on the motor block freeze plugs.

Have any of you guys had problems with the freeze plugs rusting out and leaking coolant????

to install 50hp nozzles... far as I know the new owner still running those same injectors.

P.S. I have a cousin who wrenches on feet... she says male toe nails are the worse! :B

OK Troy, whatever you say. We all know you take every opportunity to say the Cummins diesel is junk. That's fine. Pretty sure that opinion is contrary to most people's opinions and experiences.

OK Ian... I've owned 05 Dodge and my cousin wrenches on them. Injectors on these common rails fail more than your internet buddies report. :W

People with the 03-07 5.9 Cummins should be running as small of a micron fuel filter as possible if they want to make it past 150K.
Cummins12v98, I call that statement bull. '04.5 with 163k and still all original injectors and lift pump. Pulling out in 2 weeks for a 7week,5k trip and I have no worries. JME

Say bull all you want but you talk to Dynomite Diesel or any Bosch injector shop and they will tell you the same.

Like everything there are variables. So you won't run a 4 micron filter if it will help your injectors run longer?

There are several things one can help prevent or fix on a Cummins if they so choose.

1. replace starter contacts before it won't disengage and burn up wiring

2. replace lift pump on 98-02 24 valve before the lift pump takes out the injection pump.

3. Tab killer dowel pin before it comes out and damages the timing case.

There are several more but bury your head and roll the dice. I don't I fix things before they become a problem.
No need to talk to after market shops. I just go up the road 20 miles to OEM shop along US-31 with the big "C" on the sign. Or talk to people I know in the big "C" Tech Center. Have a good day.

4. Delete (At your own risk) all the emissions******(ie DPF/EGR). Every hot shot truck I see has some how lost the DPF. :h

I believe improved fuel filtration can only help, but not limited to. I'm not sure what are the tolerances of the parts inside a injector, but I bet they're much tighter than engine parts. Add in minimal lubrication from ULSD, Pilot injection (cycles your injectors 5X compared non Pilot injection engines) and a fuel filter that passes some solids to your injectors so injectors do fail for various reason.

You're an entertaining fellow Don. But just so you know back in '12 I stopped on I-10 on 2 occasions to assist some RV'ers who were broken down and sitting on the shoulder.

BTW... Those 2 trucks were 6.7 cummins. Just so you know. :W

Drunk behind the keyboard is more funny, and safer, than drunk behind the wheel, in a Dodge P/U. Those Dodge Boys know how to party on the job, without getting fired for it.

my buddys at work have blown them out of the block, but they spin them faster then most, with 4k governor springs the water pump is really spinning, their is a blocker plate that is bolted across that takes care of this problem.. i dont believe their are many trucks that neglected that the plugs rot out from the inside, but I have seen many MI trucks used in snow plow business that i would not be surprised they did not rot from the outside

Hate to say it but anyone with an older diesel (pre 2007) be it whatever brand had better be adding some kind of lube additive to their fuel. If not injectors and pump will be in their future.

OH******I have 146K on my 04 with all the OE injectors WTH am I going to do? Troy can you PM me your phone number so if my POS Cummins warped in a POS Ram body built by drunkards and druggies drops a injector or two, you can tow me to my house with your manly Ford Super Duper Duty....PPPLLLLEEEAAAASSSSEEEE! :W:B:W:B:W:B:W:B
