Truck build out for

Looking at kicking it up a notch to a Host Mammoth 3x slide.

Underneath will set a F XXX dually. Looking at the many charts available from Ford I often find the F 450 at less payload then the F 350. That said I am also looking at the F 550 but due to size of the truck, not sure it's a viable option.

Truck will be 2020 model.

My AF 1150 tipping the scales at 5600 in travel trim has worked with the F 350 platform with no issues. But the Mammoth and truck will be last stop in the travel/truck/TC road of life. Sure that sometime in the future near or far this quite old man will slow and be happy to sit on a front porch...

I am listening, let me hear any and all build outs, options, etc, open discussion I am not set on anything other than the Mammoth 3x

It’s clear if you look at those charts that the F450 has a higher capacity (about 2800) than the F350, but either has way more GVWR than the pickup versions. Care to guess why the F450 has a much higher rating in chassis form? 😄

Payload

F-350 DRW 4x4 14,000 6,550 Crew Cab

F-450 DRW 4x414,000 5,310 Crew Cab

That said I am leaning towards the F 450 4x4 CC DR KR. BRAKES and Wheel/Tire. IMO the F 350 brakes are weak, very weak for its tow/haul rating...

My derated chassis cab has as much horsepower as the 10 year old pickup it replaced yet still has more torque. It is slower off the line but the holds the speed well even with more weight and that is exactly what I expect in a diesel.

Sulastic hangers soften that quite a bit.
Now I don't feel every street cover.
The problem I see with 450 and 550 class is that they don't offer low ratio differentials, when new engines are beasts.
With TC you'll be grinding drivetrain for nothing.

I have 4:88 in my 2018 F550, don't get much lower than that.

And that there is a true story. It has never bothered me, as the longevity I get out of the trucks is worth it in exchange. But it is a big difference.

I'm ok being 60 seconds behind the other guys climbing a big hill... Considering the weight I have and tow, I'm still astonished by how much get-up-and-go the newer trucks have compared to the 7.3's and others. Something to consider though.

Oh yeah, derated engines in heavier trucks.
When I rented F550 with 6l engine, I almost created accident since I got used to good torque with my 7.3l Powerstroke.
Derated 6l with auto transmission barely moved my trailer via intersection.
When I park overnight in the mountains, the truck would not pull up the driveway. I had to back up on flatter spot and gain some momentum to get out of hotel.

I stopped and checked out a '19 450, the rear spring packs look heavier than my '15 350. It also had a sway bar comparable to the big wig I had to install. Just for grins I'd go the F550 with a nice aluminum utility bed. Sure it rides rough for going to the grocery store. That is a perfect excuse for a lightly used sports car.

Not a Mammoth but it weights closer to 7000lb

The F550 handles it like nothing plus room to add tongue weight of a boat or trailer.
The ride is not good without the camper on so I ordered a Kelderman air ride suspension, but that will be another thread when it shows up.
The actual size of the truck is not much bigger than the 350 or 450 but what is underneath is what counts.
Good luck
Wes

Took me few years to figure it out, but F550 is first in the series that is build for cargo hauling and is having rear axle to the rear.
Even F450 has axle close to 1/2 of the bed, what makes it grocery getter.
That said my F350 carries 5500lb camper just fine. Not too much to spare as 300lb of waste water in the rear was pretty noticeable, but thanks to 3.55 differential I have no problem to make 13 mpg with camper.
Decision, decisions, decisions.

Does it matter to you if it's a flatbed or p/u body?

Many of us would never own anything but a flatbed...many can't because of their silly state laws. Many, because they don't like the look.

With that, I'd obviously be in the 450/550 crowd all day long. To answer other's comments about the ride, there are options. Bobtail on an empty sprung CC is stupid painful. For us, the fix is worth every penny. Our truck rides better than a sprung truck empty or loaded. Just another option available.

'ppreciate the comments and the diversity of thought. To address some of the comments:

If you had the view I have sitting on my upper deck on the old ranch house on the S edge of the Texas Hill Country, I can see a cloud bank moving over Houston from my hilltop.

I have gone back and forth onj the F 350 vs F450 for several years. The cost difference for a King Ranch max out CC is less than a $1000 bucks, however, cost of ownership is a bit higher on the 450 or so I have been told. One major advantage is the tighter turning circle. My F 350 cannot turn around on a football field...

Here is the Ford payload specs and they don't give the 450 much as all. https://www.ford.com/cmslibs/content/dam/brand_ford/en_us/brand/resources/general/pdf/guides/Prelm19RV&TT_Ford_SuperDtyPU_May4.pdf
