truck was stolen now need to replace

Hey everyone,

So my 2012 ram dually was stolen from me and now need to replace , I'm thinking of going to a srw, I'm looking to see if a crew cab long box is a good fit to haul a 12' alpen lite truck camper and the occasional horse trailer at the same time,
Parking is limited at my condo and that's why I'm thinking to down size

Any thoughts or experiences would be great,

If I could rewind back to 2005, I'd buy a DRW. I recommend the same for you.

condolences about your loss - that sucks. Not that you're looking for a Chevy replace (sigh), but 2015 3500hd specs shows just a skosh under 78" stock ...

There is a demand for tall cabs from those that are tall or wear a hat. In many cars, I have to recline the seat back so my head does not rub the liner. Stock ride height is definitely taller in Rams and Fords than the GM's, but even GM is getting into the tall bed rails with its current body style.

Even my 2005 F250 4wd is just under 7' tall with 33" tall tires and stock suspension height. I think only the GM truck might clear a 6'5" garage.

I doubt if Fords are any shorter. Ford has been the industry leader since 1999 in unnecessarily jacked-up trucks with unnecessarily tall cabs and unnecessarily deep beds.

If you want the truck to fit in the parking garage, you may need to put a lowering kit on it. SRW, DRW won't matter.

Putting 10-ply tires on half ton trucks since aught-four.

I have read that the 2012 fuel economy "sucks" on other forums too.

My 2013 Cummins has been very good and even approaches what my 2004 5.9L would do.

You might want to reconsider the Cummins.

Ya I liked the dually set up, made things a breeze for towing , I was just exploring my options, after measuring my parking stall at home any truck except a 1/2 ton will fit, the new super dutys and rams are 6'7" tall and the door to the underground is 6'5"


Any one have insights to the new fords ? I loved my cummins , fuel economy sucked tho , looking at all my options

ok speaking from a SRW crew cab long bed, 10'11" and a 3 horse trailer go with a DRW if you can. If not the only way to handle the load will be to go with 19.5 rims and commercial g or h rated tires.

Unless you plan to downsize the TC, you should stay with a DRW. I tow heavy with my SRW but only have a 2' extension and extensive upgrades to do this safely. Knowing what you will haul and tow, do really want to buy a new SRW and then add additional cost items just to make it capable?

With a 12' camper and a horse trailer don't even consider an srw. You will be over weight and handling will be iffy at best.

Sorry about your truck.

I drive both. If I was in your shoes I would beef up a new 3500 SRW if you think it can handle your setup. Unless you are towing/hauling all the time, SRW.

That's just my opinion.

Were you happy with your origin; setup? Was the dually a problem at the condo? Why mess with a good thing?

Most people say that when they have gone from srw to dually, they would never go back. I can't assess your parking situation but I would not go srw if I had a choice. You never know what kind of RV you may want in the future and a dually gives you a lot of choices. Others will argue they would never have a dually. Your choice. The fact that you owned a dually really gives you the opportunity to weigh the pro's and con's from experience. The most vocal against dually's are sometimes those that have never owned one.
