What happened around the 14 min mark here?

This GMC 3500 is a really nice pickup.

The class 8 rig at 14mins is likely 28,000lbs even if running empty.

dually diesel can't pull with a class 8

The main difference I see is the 400 hp /800 engine only has 6 gears to work with.

The 400 hp 1650 torque engine probably has many more gears with very close ratio to each other.

400 hp is 400 hp regardless of the torque rating. It is transmission gears that is in play here.

I watched the video again and I am convinced that they were bottle necked behind a slow semi and had to wait for traffic to clear to go around. They did change lanes immediately after the semi passed.

Not much of a test if they did that ,remember it is supposed to be a comparison ,if they slowed down the fans of the truck would howl and demand a do over eh?

I watched the video then watched the 2014 RAM doing the same test.

They were getting jerked back and forth more with the GM. The RAM had the rear air suspension and was not as jerky. May be a good thing?

The GM was 20 seconds slower than the RAM and the RAM had 10% better fuel economy pulling the grade with 3.3 VS 3.0mpg for the GM.

Looks like the trucks are very similar in performance. Interesting to see how the BlueOval does.

Explain how the same 2013 Ram pulling only 17,000 lbs took 34 seconds longer than the 2014 Ram pulling 19,000??

As for jerky look at 7:20 for the 2014 Ram.

Several times they complained of rough ride in the Ram. 6:55 10:42 and 12:32 for the 2014 ram.

At 13:12 of the 2015 Chevy they commented that there was no sag on the chevy. Without air bags this would indicate to me the tongue weight was very light thus you are going to have some jerking from a low tongue weight trailer.

I would expect the Blue oval will blow the doors off the Ram and Chevy. There is no substitute for horsepower.

I think hone eagle is right - the two rigs weighed nearly the same, and the one with bigger torques motored past the one with littler torques pulling the same grade. That passing speed difference wasn't because of 30 or 50 hp I wouldn't think.

No not a clue but most likely a D13 ,the most common engine by far, they no longer use any engine but their own, most D16 have a larger grille and different hood profile but not all.
We also have no clue if the trailer is empty or not .

The empty chevy truck is 8000 lbs or so add 19000 lbs of trailer and you are to 27k add in a Mr. Truck and the other guy you are probably at about 27.5k.

The volvo + trailer if empty is somewhere in the low 30k range. So the volvo could weigh only 2-3000 lbs more.

The truth is you don't have the slightest clue what engine is in the volvo truck. It matters none what is the most common engine. I never said what engine it had but the chevy was likely giving up some horsepower to the volvo. The volvo also has more transmission speeds and can be kept closer to peak power.

Volvo tractor will be over 17,000# bobtail so more like double the pick-ups weight. Mine is 465 hp by far the most common rating.
So you are off a bit.

I don't get what the big deal is.

The volvo was going maybe 5-10 mph faster and was probably unloaded or very lightly loaded So if it was unloaded it was maybe 1-2k lbs more than the chevy. The volvo can be had with up to 600 horse. If the chevy was giving up 200 horse and at the same weight no wonder it got passed.

Did you notice that the chevy passed a class 8 truck that was going at least 15 mph slower than it was not 10 seconds before it got passed.

It looks like Mr. Truck moves over to pass right after that semi passes him. Maybe slower traffic in right lane?
