Looking to purchase a new TV to pull our 2006 Jayco Jayfeather 29Y. We currently tow with a 2004 Ford Expedition V8 and it has done well for us. Have a few vehicles that we are interested in .... Nissan Armada, Toyota Sequoya, "newer" Ford Expedition, Chevy Tahoe, Chevy Suburban.... Would love your input (good or bad)on what you think would make a good tow vehicle for us.
Thanks!!
Just the 2 of us!

Congrats. The Armada is a real workhorse for a ½ ton. Mine just hit 100K and the last 45k has been only towing a boat or TT. My trailer is the same weight as yours and does a great job. Lots of power and torque. We do a fair amount of towing in the NC Mountains and it pulls strong. Good choice. Enjoy!

Update!!! Thanks for all the input! We bought a 2013 Nissan Armada and love it. We also upgraded our TT to a Keystone Outback Terrain 273TRL. The Armada pulls it like a dream! Looking forward to our first trip!!

whatever vehicle you buy, you first need to know the:
hp of the motor, the torque of the motor, ratio of the differential and the # of trans gears (would be nice to know trans ratios, but do not know where you would get that info)

but with this information and the tow capacity you should be able to determine the best unit for your needs. normally a larger truck, 3/4 ton + are going to have larger brakes****

I think Toyota is the only brand that has signed on to test their vehicles against the (new national towing standard test):
***not really sure of that, but did see a video about the test. The problem with different brands using the std tow test and showing results: then they cannot just throw tow rating numbers at you and you really do not know how they arrived at those numbers.

will the dealers let you test drive the different vehicles pulling your trailer? note: many of the new vehicles have the internal braking systems, they are great, so I have been told, you will probably want that feature on your new vehicle.

sorry, I am not much help as I still drive an old dodge diesel 2005 model, I pull a bit smaller trailer than you, but last summer the old dodge pulled my trailer up into the mountains fine, 305 hp with 610 pds of torque, 3.73 ratio differential. lots of power when needed.
T/H feature held the load back on the down hill, that was nice, not having to ride the brake all the way down.

when we bought our first TT in 05 around 7k it pulled fine with our 6.0 2500HD, then I bought a 06 2500HD diesel and have never looked back since. I am glad I went with the diesel burner because we bought a 5er last fall I would of had to buy another truck because their is now way i was going to tow 12.7k with that motor

Tow my 5ver with the truck in my sig. Love the 6.0/6speed combo, pulls really easy.

I think any GM with a 5.3 won't be enough for your weights. I have a Silverado with a 5.3 and a factory "tow package" that came with 3.42 gears. With a family of 4 in the truck and our 26BH (5300 lbs dry) loaded, the truck pulls fine on flat roads but I have little passing power beyond 60 and it struggles up moderate inclines. The weight figures may look OK on paper, but this is just my personal experience with a half ton. Needless to say I'm in the market for a 3/4 ton gas or diesel.

Test drive a Ford or Chevy full size van - 3/4 or one ton. By far the most payload capacity and interior space for the buck, and are available with drive trains set up for towing. Lots of people shy away from them thinking they are hard to maneuver or park, but with the wheels so close to the corners of the van, they handle quite well. You also have excellent driving position and visibility. Nice long wheelbase, and tow like a dream .....

Our last trailer was similar to yours - a Jayco JayFeather 29N - and it towed great with our old Chevy G20 Van as well as the Ford E350 now in our signature.

Speaking from someone who has a truck with an extremely short wheelbase (Land Rover Discovery II) choose a vehicle with a longer wheelbase and you'll be a happier tower!

I had a 2012 and 2013 Suburban. Both had 5.3 and 3.42 with tow package. Due to the tongue weight of my trailer, I did not tow my trailer. I did tow 20 stock trailers that were loaded over 6k pounds. They did great.

As for pickups, APT misses his, and I miss my 2500 Yukon XL. I could not find a cover for $500 or less. My wife will not put anything in the bed of the truck, because the tailgate is too high, and then to reach over the tailgate to retreive anything is nearly impossible.

The Suburban/Yukon XL is a very comfortable vehicle. My daughters rate the second row buckets the best second row seats ever (of course the 2013 were heated)! Additionally, the maintenance schedule for the GMs will equate to lower operating costs.

Love my 2500 Burb! It would yank that TT around like a rag doll. Overkill? Sure!

Truthfully, with a family of 4 any of the half tons with the best respective gearing and towing packages would be enough for you. And that starts becoming the harder part, finding one with the proper gear. A GM with 3.08 is very common which also means no HD towing package/trans/oil coolers. One nice thing about the 3/4 tons, they all come standard with the necessary towing equipment.

Are you open to pickups? They are cheaper than SUVs new and used for the same level of equipment. They tend to be better tow vehicles with longer wheelbases and higher payloads. The truck bed offers a huge space to store dirty/wet camping toys and gear. A $500 cover provides protection from wind and precipitation. I miss my truck bed!
