Which rear gear for 2012 2500 Hemi Ram?

I need to trade up to a 3/4 ton truck to pull our camper. My 05 F150 4x4 isnt able to handle the new camper we got last year.

My budget is tight, but i was able to find a couple of new Ram 2500 hemi 4x4. One has 3.73 and another has 4.10. Other options are different so i cant decide on which, making the rear gear kinda the deciding factor.

My Puma 26FBSS is 28ft long and has a dry weight of 6200lbs and a cargo carrying weight of 6400lbs for a GCWR of 12600lbs!

This truck would also be a daily driver and to run town errands. I think I should get the 4.10s, but do i really need it. We go camping about every other weekend in the summer.

Any info/opinions would be greatly appreciated! I need to make a decision fast before these trucks disappear off the lots!

Thanks, Chris

I have an 08 Hemi MegaCab with 3.73's and 275/70-17 tires pulling an 06 Puma 249RBSS.
Loaded trailer is around 7800lbs. While the 3.73's do OK, I would go for the 4.10's. Better for when you hit the big hills!

You def won't need 4'10 for that light of a TT. Even at 9000lbs the 6.7 is barely working.

OP is talking about the Hemi, however I do agree with you on the 6.7...:)

LOL, that's what happens when old people start reading late at night.

I also vote for the 4.10 with the HEMI. I had 3.73s and had them changed to 4.56s in mine; much better for towing. I am pulling about 8500 lbs.

No reason not to get the 4.10 with a gasser. No measurable fuel economy difference, but you'd feel 10% more wheel torque. Dodge's first gear ratio at 3.0 is a bit tall compared to Ford/GM's first gear. Lots of power from the Hemi, though.

That seems insanely high of cargo capacity on a TT, I would think you're at 7500-8000 lbs ready to camp - which would be fine with either gear ratio...

I recommend 4:10 with gasser. Also consider that you may someday move to heavier rv and you will be happy with 4:10. Less work for the transmission and the loss in mpg is negligible.

I own a 12 Ram 2500 with 3.73's and tow 9000lbs. It turns 1600 rpms at 62mph with the 245/70/17's on it. With 265's it will turn slightly lower. I don't like towing at that low of rpm's I feel like it runs smoother when I'm near 18-1900 rpms. 4.10's would do that. As far as power with the 3.73's well I'm never at a loss that's for sure. Pulling the hill/mtns in Oregon I like to run 55-60 in 5th, as that gets me around 18-2000 rpms. Running 55-60 in 6th is just bogging it. Out on the freeway if I could I'd run 65+ all day, but those dang ST tires might blow. Running empty I get around 17-19 hwy. In town I really doubt the 4.10's would make a diff on mpg. You will definitely be turning some rpms with 4.10's running 70-75 if that's how you like to run. If I towed more I would like the 4.10's but I'm about 50/50 so the 3.73's work for me.

If you like running larger tires like 285's then 4.10 would bring you back to 3.73's.

You def won't need 4'10 for that light of a TT. Even at 9000lbs the 6.7 is barely working. If you tow in big mtns then the 4.10 would be the choice. On the flats with semi hilly terrain then the 3.73's would be fine.

I'd go for the 4.10s.

Either ratio works just fine. If you drive a lot at 70mph + 3.73 might be best. I have 3.73 and believe 4.10 would be better for towing at 55-60. Enjoy your new truck.
