Hello, We are planning a trip from Carson City Nevada area to Prosser Washington at the end of September. We have a pickup and 28 ft travel trailer. Looking for input on the best way to go. Don't want to take the quickest route necessarily, but don't want to be going up and down big mountain passes too. Thanks in advance.

We stayed in the "Hi Desert" RV Park in Winnemucca after towing from Klamath Falls on Highway 140, a delightful trip for us.

This was the first (and so far, only) time that someone came out from the office to greet us, told us where our site was located and suggested that we go ahead and get settled before coming back to the office to register. I still remember that with appreciation.

Stayed overnight at New Frontier Mar 2015. Had been recently opened, as I remember. Pretty wide open, trees small but growing (!!), grass here and there!!. Sites were fairly large, good hook ups, paved with gravel around pad. Large fenced dog run. It also is a work camp to use a term!! Lots of small (think tiny house?) modulars around perimeter for transient workers in the area.

When we were there the store hadn't opened up fully yet, but looked like it would be a good sized market to support long term and workers.

Great restaurant right next door - Wingers. Very good!!

Pic of our site and friends next door:

Google Earth has a good view of the park showing the size of it!!!

Overnights were in Homedale, ID and Winnemucca.

So the reverse will work well.

Overnighted at WINNEMUCCA / I-80 KOA.

One we haven't tried was New Frontier RV Park...suppose to be nice.

Ive done this road also and I agree. Make sure you stop at John Day and check out the Fossil Beds, (watch for rattle snakes as I had my first encounter with one there) and the Chinese Doctors museum is also a must see.

@Finally Time : No, we are attending a family wedding. Is there a Balloon show going on? Might be interested in checking it out if time allows.

Just checked online. Darn, we have commitments here and can't leave until after the Balloon rally is over. And we're missing the Reno one this year too. 😞

Are you staying at the Wine Country RV Park for the Prosser Balloon Rally?

395 would be my recommendation all the way.

If time is not of the essence, I would just run 395 straight up. It will take longer but it's more scenic.

395 is a scenic drive with no freeway hassles. From open desert to trees it has it all. Just across the OR/CA border is a gem. Goose Lake state park. Only 20A water electric sites, but never crowded so you can always get a decent site.

95 thru Winnemucca to I-84. You'll go down a big pass at Pendleton OR.
