Dahlonega is home to the first US gold rush... prior to the 49'ers in CA.. There are gold mines you can tour that will teach you to pan for gold and gems.. Our GA capital dome is covered with Dahlonega GA gold!!
Besides gold mining, there is a big kayaking store there with a wave pool that they can teach you to kayak in... many folks in the area love spending time in the water, kayaking, canoeing, and stand up paddle boarding in the local lakes..
Not sure if you have kids or not, but if you have young girls... you must take them to Babyland General in Cleveland.. birthplace of Cabbage Patch kids.. tour to see the "babies born" is free, except for the fact that it ends in the gift shop, and it is almost impossible to get out without "adopting a baby" or two.
Helen is more commercial that Dahlonega but is an interesting place to visit.. spring time is trout season and you can fish in many of the rivers in the area, even in the middle of Helen. You can also tube the river right through town if the weather is warm enough to hit the water.
I agree that it is easy to access with hwy 400 solving the majority of the mountain road driving... and to get to Smokies from Dahlonega you will have to drive mountains..
