Lake Superior Grand Circle Tour

We are planning a Lake Superior Circle Tour in late September-early October. I'm really struggling trying to make reservations at some provincial parks. I can only assume that they turn off the electricity on Sept. 4th. We have a generator but really don't care to use it a lot. If we must, do they allow unlimited hours or times. Does anyone know of private campgrounds in Ontario,
CA or around the Superior Circle Tour? We would like to travel late Sept.-early October to see some of the colors and avoid the crowds. Travelling in a 32 foot 5th wheel. Thanks for any help you can offer.

We did the southern part of the Lake Superior Loop in September 2015 in our 5th wheel. Some of the campgrounds/RV parks we stayed in included the US Forest Service's South Kawashiwi River CG south of Ely, MN (we also visited the Boundary Waters Canoe Area); Memorial Park CG in Washburn, WI to visit the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore; Ft. Wilkins Historic State Park on the tip of the Keewenaw Peninsula and Hurricane River CG at Pictured Cliffs National Lakeshore in MI.

Some of these campgrounds were fairly rustic, but all except the Pictured Cliffs NLS had some hookups. Even the Forest Service CG near Ely had 30A/50A electric hookups plus a single water faucet and dump for the CG.

We wanted to go up to Grand Portage and take the ferry out to Isle Royale National Park, but the weather turned nasty about that time, so we skipped it. We were planning to stay at Judge C.R. Magney State Park, which closes in early October. We didn't need reservations then, but apparently they are required all season now.

It really is a wonderful time of the year to visit Lake Superior, but you naturally need to be prepared for any kind of weather. So, have a great time on your trip!

As suggested, it's best to call the parks to get accurate info. Neys PP, west of Marathon has sites right on the lake and are suitable for longer RVs. We also stop at the town run park in Marathon, full services and right on a small lake in town, fast wifi. Lake Superior PP (Rabbit Blanket Lake) is probably open at the times you are thinking, but the sites are too tight for our 36 ft. 5er. Haven't been in Sleeping Giant in a while but it's worthy of looking at. All the PP's mentioned have only 30 amp service, no water or sewer but they have fill and dump sites.

The bridge at Nipigon mentioned above is operational again but is still being worked on.

Has that one bridge in Canada been fixed ?

Just slightly off topic but don't plan on seeing much of the Lake while in Canada; too many trees between the road and the water.

You can search on www.woodalls.com for parks that are open all year.

We traveled north of Lake Superior on October 1st, 2nd, and 3rd last year.
The tree colors were beautiful.
It was also the start of black bear season and we saw several bears at the side of the road.
We found some provincial parks were open, and others were closed. The same with private parks. Many private ones were closed.
Different parks must make their own schedules. Probably have to contact the parks individually by phone.

Not a lot of people are camping around Lake Superior in late September, early October. Hence, reservations are not needed. However, a sweater and rain gear are.

They are open and you will not have any problems staying in any of the prov. parks, the crowds are gone therefore reservations are not needed. Sept is a beautiful month, the flies are gone for the most part, the days are warm and the nights are cool to sleep.

Note just because you can not reserve on line that does not mean that they are not open they just stop taking reservations

I made this mistake and thought they were closed

We were hoping to stay in Provincial Parks as we have heard they are very nice. They won't accept reservations after Sept. 4 even tho they say they are open until late October. Maybe I will give a call tomorrow and see what the discrepancy is. Thanks for your help.

Have you considered solar? With enough panels and conservative electric use the sun slant in September and October shouldn't matter.
