Roll Call Alaska 2015

I know its early but we have been planning for the past 3 months. I know its another 15 months at least till we leave but we are just going crazy...
So here is our very rough plan overview. Leave mid June from western NY; travel west up through Ill., Wis., Min., ND, into Canada.
Diagonally across Saskatch. and Alberta, BC, and YT...
Our first destination is Fairbanks, via Top of the World Highway... thinking of doing the Dempster to the Arctic Circle. I know there will many stops... some short, some long but all will be great.
Fairbanks to Homer with the obligatory Denali stop for a few days.
Homer to Portland Or; Oregon to San Fran; San Fran to home via the Northern US.

We have so much planning yet to do but reading all the Roll Call posts in 2013, and 2014 just keeps us going. Started to plan finances which brings us to the first major question.
I have heard all the diesel advantages and draw backs of the gas engines. We invested in a 32' fifth wheel and 2013 GMC 2500 HD with 6.0L Crew 4x4. The fiver weighs about 8K empty, I would guess 10,500 loaded. ( I will get that checked for sure)Brand new to Rving

The truck is my every dayer.... need the 4 wheel drive here in winter. The decision with gas was pure economics. A Cummins diesel and matching tranny was $9500 more. Doing the math it was going to take a bunch of miles to save enough in mileage to pay for the increase in price. About 100000 mile by my calculation. We not going to be full timers; one long trip a year to Florida.
Traveling around NY and Pa and maybe Florida, that all makes sense but going on a trip like this, I am not so sure gas was the way to go. So I am asking for those who used a truck like mine to haul a fifth wheel through Canada...Alaska...et al... What kind of mileage can I expect? Sorry for the novelette...I will get better at this.

Edited to add 'Alaska' within the title.

Just a food place mention. If you are coming up, or going down, the Fraser Canyon, Spences Bridge happens to have just an outstanding food oasis. If you are driving along..looking for a red barn/log house about 1/2 way from one end of SP to the other..it's only a couple blocks...on the river side..turning down the road, turn left at hey...there we are. We were in this afternoon and tell you what...organic, home cooked...yup, worth the stop. Don't be thinking anything else..like gas...there isn't. But food? oh yeah....open till 7, 7 days a week.

As far back as the early 70's, Destruction Bay to (more or less) Beaver Creek has always been the worst part of the road, even in the days when the gravel part of the road (i.e. the Canadian side) was a better drive (by an order of magnitude) than the Alaska side was alleged to be "paved".

Some sort of climatology study interfaced with a geology report about that area would be very interesting.

Made it to Tok last night, and can confirm the road from Destruction Bay to Beaver Creek is extremely poor. Constant frost heaves, road breaks, rolling whoops, construction, etc. By far the slowest leg of our journey and makes the rest of the Alcan look like butter!

On the plus side, you'll be going so slow, it will make it easier to spot the local population...

Road report 6/1/2015 Anchorage - Tok - Dawson - Whitehorse - Haines Jct. to Anchorage Loop to start our summer.

Klondike Hwy- again down to Beaver Creek campground - great campground we saw three Black Bears on the trail down to the river. The road is still good.

There's a Beaver Creek campground on the Klondike Highway? Whereabouts is that? Above which river?

Our trip has been delayed, at least for this year, but I'm glad to read about 2015 conditions. Probably similar from year to year, just different spots. Thanks for the campground descriptions. Safe travels

Road report 6/1/2015 Anchorage - Tok - Dawson - Whitehorse - Haines Jct. to Anchorage Loop to start our summer.

Anchorage to Glenallen the road is in good shape, not to may frost heaves.
Short construction just N of Palmer.
Glenallen to Tok - paved but rough, some big frost heaves, be careful or you may damage an axle. There is construction about 65 miles past Glenallen, expect short delays.
Taylor Hwy - first 50 miles from Tok side paved to West Fork campground.
West Fork campground is great, flat back in and pull thru sites.
Saw large Linx trot thru.
The rest of the Taylor Hwy is unpave in good shape but extremely DUSTY.
Top of the World Hwy - is unpaved, in good shape, a couple of soft spots near Dawson, but extremely DUSTY. Keep your speed down to 35 pull over when other vehicles are coming toward you to minimize rock damage or after they pass to let the DUST settle.
Dawson campground - Klondike River near the airport, flight operations stopped about 9 P.M. Flat back in sites, some very large for class A. Well treed, plenty of distance between spots. 10 miles to town but better than staying in a dusty parking lot and a lot cheaper, water on site but that's it.
Dempster Hwy - good shape all gravel only mildly dusty, very little traffic.
Tombstone campground at the visitor center nice quiet but up high so a little cool at night.
Klondike Hwy - paved good condition down to Five finger rapids on the Yukon.
Tatchum Lake campground is about five miles down a dirt road but very nice quiet on the lake with boat access. Only one other camper there when we were there on 5/28. There is a Tatchum River campground right next to the road kind of down in a valley, a little dark for us so we stayed at the Lake.
Klondike Hwy- again down to Beaver Creek campground - great campground we saw three Black Bears on the trail down to the river. The road is still good.
Construction just N of Whitehorse pilot car an short delays.
Whitehorse to Haines Jct. the road is good, short trip from Whitehorse to Pine Lake campground just short of Haines Jct. Not as level as most of the others but it can accommodate larger rigs, I saw two 5th wheels probably 50' in all down in the campground. Water on site for cooking.
When you get up to leave in the morning, head toward Haines Jct. and stop at the Village Bakery. Turn at the Raven Motel head down into what looks like a neighborhood at the end of the street on the left. Good hot rolls, pastries something you would not expect in such a little town. Friday or Saturday, I can't remember they have an all you can eat fish fry and live music.
Haines Jct. to Destruction Bay the road is good, after that it is rough with frost heaves and broken pavement (slow down) about 60 miles S of Beaver Creek you will encounter stretches of construction. If it is dry expect flying rocks and dust, if it is raining expect mud lots of it. The road is pretty good not something you will get stuck in just makes a mess of the rig. You can wash the rig in Tok Just past Fast Eddies for about $20, pressure wash for a forty footer.
Beaver Creek to the Border the road is good.
Border - toward Tok expect construction patching the road using tar that will coat your rig.
Stop at the Tetlin Refuge visitor center nice displays. Most people just fly by, what is the hurry you can easily make Tok in about an hour. We stayed in the Tetlin Wild life Refuge free campground at Lake View campground, it has only10 spots and only for rigs under 30'. Very quiet with new outhouse and great view.
That's the loop, hopefully you will slow down and take in some of what Alaska and Canada have to offer.

We live in Anchorage and play everywhere.

We are currently in High Level Alberta after spending a week in the Canadian Rockies. We are taking the Deh Cho via the Mackenzie Highway route so we can check off the Northwest Territories off our list. Been a great trip so far. No issues finding places to stop without reservations, but we are ok without services so provincial parks have been our most common stops. The sites with services at the national parks in the Rockies were harder to come by.

Drove from Dawson Creek "mile 0" to Fort Nelson today.
Road construction at the approach to the Peace River Bridge, otherwise no problem but the light rain.

Being singled out because of geography, Oklahoma being close to Texas, reminds me of something that happened a few years ago when crossing INTO the US.
At that time I wasn't a Canadian citizen and traveled with my British passport.
"You have a British passport, you'll have to go in for further examination"
"Why is that"-me
"Well, Britain is part of the Commonwealth?"
"Yes??" me
"Pakistan is also part of the Commonwealth"
"Um Yes???"
"Well, we are at war with Pakistan!"
"No you're not, you're at war with Iraq and Afghanistan" -me
"It's all the same country!!"

At that point, I gave up, but they did let me in after finger printing me!
Sometimes I sit and think deep thoughts. other times, I just sit!

We have taken a break from our duties at Tetlin VC took a road trip down to Valdez. We had had reports of beautiful weather here but as expected it has turned to the worse, rain for the next three days. I feel like the 2 years we spent on the Oregon coast, we'll make the best of it.
