Road report 6/1/2015 Anchorage - Tok - Dawson - Whitehorse - Haines Jct. to Anchorage Loop to start our summer.
Anchorage to Glenallen the road is in good shape, not to may frost heaves.
Short construction just N of Palmer.
Glenallen to Tok - paved but rough, some big frost heaves, be careful or you may damage an axle. There is construction about 65 miles past Glenallen, expect short delays.
Taylor Hwy - first 50 miles from Tok side paved to West Fork campground.
West Fork campground is great, flat back in and pull thru sites.
Saw large Linx trot thru.
The rest of the Taylor Hwy is unpave in good shape but extremely DUSTY.
Top of the World Hwy - is unpaved, in good shape, a couple of soft spots near Dawson, but extremely DUSTY. Keep your speed down to 35 pull over when other vehicles are coming toward you to minimize rock damage or after they pass to let the DUST settle.
Dawson campground - Klondike River near the airport, flight operations stopped about 9 P.M. Flat back in sites, some very large for class A. Well treed, plenty of distance between spots. 10 miles to town but better than staying in a dusty parking lot and a lot cheaper, water on site but that's it.
Dempster Hwy - good shape all gravel only mildly dusty, very little traffic.
Tombstone campground at the visitor center nice quiet but up high so a little cool at night.
Klondike Hwy - paved good condition down to Five finger rapids on the Yukon.
Tatchum Lake campground is about five miles down a dirt road but very nice quiet on the lake with boat access. Only one other camper there when we were there on 5/28. There is a Tatchum River campground right next to the road kind of down in a valley, a little dark for us so we stayed at the Lake.
Klondike Hwy- again down to Beaver Creek campground - great campground we saw three Black Bears on the trail down to the river. The road is still good.
Construction just N of Whitehorse pilot car an short delays.
Whitehorse to Haines Jct. the road is good, short trip from Whitehorse to Pine Lake campground just short of Haines Jct. Not as level as most of the others but it can accommodate larger rigs, I saw two 5th wheels probably 50' in all down in the campground. Water on site for cooking.
When you get up to leave in the morning, head toward Haines Jct. and stop at the Village Bakery. Turn at the Raven Motel head down into what looks like a neighborhood at the end of the street on the left. Good hot rolls, pastries something you would not expect in such a little town. Friday or Saturday, I can't remember they have an all you can eat fish fry and live music.
Haines Jct. to Destruction Bay the road is good, after that it is rough with frost heaves and broken pavement (slow down) about 60 miles S of Beaver Creek you will encounter stretches of construction. If it is dry expect flying rocks and dust, if it is raining expect mud lots of it. The road is pretty good not something you will get stuck in just makes a mess of the rig. You can wash the rig in Tok Just past Fast Eddies for about $20, pressure wash for a forty footer.
Beaver Creek to the Border the road is good.
Border - toward Tok expect construction patching the road using tar that will coat your rig.
Stop at the Tetlin Refuge visitor center nice displays. Most people just fly by, what is the hurry you can easily make Tok in about an hour. We stayed in the Tetlin Wild life Refuge free campground at Lake View campground, it has only10 spots and only for rigs under 30'. Very quiet with new outhouse and great view.
That's the loop, hopefully you will slow down and take in some of what Alaska and Canada have to offer.
We live in Anchorage and play everywhere.
