We are planning a trip to visit family in Farmington, NM this summer, and we're looking for a place to stay for a few days. Prefer Farmington, but would consider Bloomfield or Aztec I guess. Don't need much in the way of amenities. Any suggestions?

There is a great state park out of Bloomfield. Navajo Dam SP. You have to cross the dam to get to it. It has beautiful views of the lake which is home to a great many houseboats. The views of the mountains are great. DH loves to fly fish there. If you have any golfers, , Piรฑon Hills in Farmington is a great little course. Ther are some really good ruins to visit in Bloomfield too. Durango is about an hr. away and is a good day trip, raft rides, etc.

And the fishing below the dam is world class.

Check out the Mom and Pop RV park, we stayed there for a couple of nights a few years ago. Really nice people and inexpensive with a super diner a block away. Downside-small, right in town in a business district, nothing fancy at all.

One more thing, be sure to go to the Bolack Museum in town, your family probably knows about it. An amazing place and you can get a private guided docent tour with just a phone call, free too. One is about natural history and the other is all mechanical stuff, one of the best collections of stuff I've ever seen.

We stayed at the Desert Rose Resort. Not really a resort but a nice quiet CG. They have an enclosed dog run and the park is well maintained. It's in Bloomfield just east of Farmington. Seems like we couldn't find a good spot in Farmington. We used it as a base camp to run down to Chaco Culture and it actually better for that than Farmington. I was personally underwhelmed by Chaco but that may have been the unpleasant rangers there and the fact that it was hotter than heck at the time.
