camping advice around Jackson Hole, WY

This summer we are taking our motorhome from Estes Park, CO to Grizzly RV on the west side of Yellowstone.

We would like to stay around Jackson Hole for a few days to view the Tetons, but am unfamiliar with campgrounds around there.

Can anyone offer advice on good campgrounds for big rigs and also any we should avoid? We would appreciate it.

thanks

So...go smelly for a couple of days. What did you do when you were in one of Uncle Sams camping clubs & you were out for a multiday hike?

No shower in that Class C CloudDriver or do you use it as a store room?

Gee - feeling a bit grumpy aren't we.

If you had actually read the previous posts, you would have seen that I was responding to the person who wasn't sure whether there were showers at Gros Ventre.

And yes, since you asked, we do use the "facilities" in out motorhome, including the shower.

Are you happy now that you know?

We stayed in a KOA south of Jackson a few years back. It was alright, but not the nicest we've stayed at by far. And remember, Jackson or Teton in the name doesn't mean close, check the map for location. We were a good 20 miles south of the town and that put us an hour south of the park.

We stayed at Grizzly RV last spring. Great park, great people, and right on the edge of town!

Enjoy the trip, we did!

Besides the awesome beauty of the Jackson Hole area, once the sun goes down we also enjoy the restaurants/nightlife of Jackson, so we stay at Gros Ventre. The Virginian (in town) is a parking lot type RV park and quite pricey.

If you want to meet some locals in Jackson, visit Eleanor's Bar & Grill. A little hard to find, the entrance is through a liquor store (no kidding). Great food and friendly people.

Safe travels.

BUT, There is water and a dump station. We shower in the RV.
May pose a problem for those without a built in shower.

The shower area at Colter Bay have about 16-18 showers for both men and women. It's not a big deal to get in as they are open all day. That's what we use, most of the time, and the price isn't too bad as long as you don't take two or three showers a day. And, I am not sure that Gros Ventre has a shower area, I don't remember seeing one when we were there last June. We went to Colter Bay and used theirs.

Another vote for Gros Ventre.

Be sure to get early on clear morning and go to Mormon Row and watch the sunrise light the valley, then the mountains. Almost Heaven.

Oh YEAH! The barn shot. Got up 2 mornings before sunrise for that. A real killer for me as I am one of those 8-8:30 people. Wheels never turn before 10:30.

Those magical few moments of early sun were worth the early get up & Gros Ventre is the closest CG by far.

My vote goes to Gros Ventre. Your camper is self-contained; the only reason you probably need hookups (every day) is for AC, and you can live just fine without that in Jackson Hole. Gros Ventre is close to Jackson and the whole valley.

Coulter Bay is nice too, but it's a long drive from there to Jackson.

We stayed at Atherton Creek and enjoyed the quiet area more than Gros Ventre. Best place to see Campgrounds in Grand Teton NP

X-whatever the count is up to- for Colter Bay RV park if needing full hookups. Get your reservations in early, though, as it books up fairly quickly. Can't beat the location.

While Colter Bay RV park is one of the better concession-run FHU campgrounds in a National Park, it's still a bit more 'close' than we prefer. For this reason, the next time we're in the area, we're going to try Gros Ventre. We're comfortable without full hookups, and we've heard so many high recommendations on this board and from others.

Last time we camped in Victor ID at Teton Valley Campground

Humm, Link not working...

and drove the toad on hwy 33 (22 in WY) over Teton Pass to Jackson...25mi. I didn't want to drive the Super C thru Yellowstone or over the Pass.

Haven't camped at any of the above yet, but from what we've seen driving through, my vote would be for Colter Bay RV park if you need hookups.
