We've had wonderful vacations on Chincoteague Island, VA. It's famous for the annual roundup. swimming, and auction of the wild ponies from Assateague Island (the VA herd on the southern end of the island). This tradition was made famous in a book titled "Misty of Chincoteague", written by Margaurite Henry, and a movie adaptation by Disney studios in the 1960s. Pony Penning takes place the 3rd Wed-Fri of July, elbow-to-elbow crowds on Chincoteague. Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day are also crowded.

We have usually gone the week before the Pony Swim, staying at Tom's Cove Campground. From here, we have been able to enjoy the relaxing, laid-back island lifestyle, with easy access to Assateague Island National Seashore and public beaches. Ocean City, with its boardwalk and hustle and bustle are a short drive to the north, if you want a day or two of that excitement.

One of my favorites on the east coast is Colonial Williamsburg. If you're at all interested in history, that's the place. I always stay at American Heritage RV Park. I drive to the parking area in Williamsburg and buy my ticket. The multi day ticket is the best deal and you'll need it. So much to see and do. The interpreters don't lecture. They ask questions of the visitors that lead them to the answer on their own. Then I hop on one of their shuttle busses (included in the price) and hop on and off as I please. The one ticket works for Colonial Williamsburg, Historic Jamestowne and the Yorktown Victory Center. The Colonial Parkway is 15 miles long. I've visited several times, and always learn something new.
Hint: Wear comfortable shoes. Even with the shuttle bus, there's lots of walking to be done.
Retired and visiting as much of this beautiful country as I can.

Beach is number one, (So much so we have a family house there now)
Upstate New York, Finger Lakes, Great Lakes.
Deep Creek Lake and Rocky Gap in Maryland.
Lake Toxaway in the Mountains of North Carolina, Asheville, and the Biltmore.
Hilton Head, SC
Blue Ridge - anywhere up or down.

Then the West, so much so that one son lives in Colorado, and we feel as if it's our second home.

As with all these locations we have found that the Weather/time of year, and the people you share the adventures with are often the most important element of all the trips we take.

Surprised no one yet has mentioned the OBX - from the busier/touristy north end to the more relaxed middle and the more isolated southern Ocracoke Is.

Top on our list:
Assateague National Seashore: best October through April, also state park located there, close to Ocean City, beautiful deserted beaches. When we lived here, went 6-8 times a year.

Shenandoah National Park: best in October and April but good May-September, many caves and small Appalachian towns, excellent hiking. When we lived here, went 4-6 times a year.

Hunting Island State Park (Beaufort, SC): get a beach side site. Best October through April, good other months (rumored to be buggy in the back area during the summer). Absolutely beautiful beach located near lovely town of Beaufort, SC. Stay every time we pass through SC, about 2 times per year.

2014 Fleetwood Bounder 33C
States camped: all but Hawaii
more than 1700 days on the road

While in DC , we stay at Cherry Hill Park . If there , check out the night tour , it really is awesome..
We too stay at American Heritage in Williamsburg ,its nice and clean.
Another favorite of ours is Myrtle Beach , we always stay at Myrtle Beach Travel Park as it is ocean front , but there are a ton of other great waterfront campgrounds in that area..
Try a weekend at Hershey Park if you have kids .. even if you don't have kids , its a clean park with great chocolate!
We also liked Endless Caverns down in VA off 81.. Great Country , and a lot of stuff to do from Horseback riding , to exploring caverns..
Happy Camping . .

Lake Placid is one of our favorites. The KOA there is very nice and close to the attractions. If you go to Williamsburg I suggest staying at American Heritage. I would also suggest heading south along the seaboard to places like the Outer Banks, Charleston, and Savannah.

If you plan on crossing the border, the village of Alma, New Brunswick Canada is a nice place.
Stay at the Fundy National Park Headquarters campground. It's an easy walk from the CG to Alma. Going back is all uphill.
There's a nice view of Fundy Bay at the entrance to the CG.

Enjoy your trip.
