Our favorite resource is The Ultimate Public Campground Project. It focuses on just one thing, public camping locations and nothing else. As a result of that focus, it has thousands of locations that other all-purpose sites and apps do not include - over 28,000 in US (including Alaska) and Canada.

Although it doesn't include commercial locations, many of its listings are for full-service public campgrounds.

Another vote for the Ultimate Campground List. While I also use AllStays, which has a filter that lets you search for public campgrounds, the Ultimate Campground List includes many campgrounds that AllStays misses.

While I use RVPARKREVIEWS.COM to do my research I think you should just ask your question about good campgrounds along the route you plan to take right here on this forum. It may help you with your research by getting good suggestions from your fellow RVers.

I just keep looking down the road for advertising or a sine for a park. If I don't see one I just keep driving.

In my experience no one directory or website lists all the campgrounds/RV parks. I use the following websites to find campgrounds along our route and still encounter ones that are not listed anywhere that I can find. Some of these websites have data sets that can be downloaded to a GPS or mapping program so that you can see whats available along your planned route. There are also many data sets available on the Discovery Owner's Forum and POI Factory.

The 5 I currently use, in no particular order, are Campendium, rvparkreviews, rvparky, tripadvisor, & Yelp. Each tends to post reviews from a slightly different perspective. ParksNReviews is one I just heard about. Yet to check it.

From my experience - The two most up to date and consistently reliable tools for planning a trip of more than a few days are:

Allstays http://www.allstays.com/Campgrounds/

Good Sams http://www.woodalls.com/

All others are less consistent in their search results.

It takes time, but if you simply do a Google search with the name of the closest city or town on your route, you'll get "hits" for the various campgrounds in the area. Then you simply have to check them out on the internet.

We just went through this looking for a reliable campground near AVA, Missouri that wasn't "all male, over 21, and clothing optional". But we found one.

Search on: for example: "Kansas City, Missouri, campground"... and you'll get "hits". Then search them out. Guides are nice, and I really like using the KOA and the Good Sam campground finder for theirs. But, they are not everywhere. Google IS everywhere, and if nothing else, it will return Yellow Pages results also if they don't have a web site.

Good luck! Watch out for those "clothing free" sites. I'm sure you don't want any surprises when you check in! (heee, heee!)

I just did a campground search for Kansas City and didn't find any clothing optional campgrounds. Where are they? LOL I live here and never heard of such a thing. Let me know when your coming and I might be able to recommend a campground.

Found Smithville Lake near Kansas City (no, not clothing optional). We'll be there at the end of June. Same trip well be in AVA Missouri. Found Missouri Park Campground in Mountain Grove.

(FYI, the one in Ava is called Catcus Canyon Campground.

Smithville lake is our weekend go to campground! It is only about 15 miles from home. If you like wine try the Pagoda Ridge winery just outside of Smithville. In the summer they serve a slushy drink made with wine. Awesome!!! Would love to meet and greet if you have the time.

Rv Park Reviews has an excellent park locator. Just click on the state, look for the largest numbered dots in the overall area that you have an interest in. As you start to magnify you will be able map in on the campgrounds in the particular place you looking for. All the campgrounds are linked to reviews and google maps.

I just use Google maps zoom in on the area I am interested in and search for rv parks or campgrounds. Then use RV park reviews and or Good Sam's to research my selections.

Campendium is a great resource for finding campgrounds. Type in the name of a town and you will see a list and a map of the nearby campgrounds. There are user reviews, campground photos and links to blog posts. It's always the first place I look for campgrounds. Many parks are listed, but not all have reviews yet.
