Fort Pickens is Closed

Just got a call from Fort Pickens saying that they are closing at 5:00 p.m. today for all visitors and campers due to the expected storm over the weekend causing road overwash.

They say that they will reassess the situation on Monday, Decemeber 23rd.

Glad I haven't left home yet for my Saturday reservation, but I wonder if they will hold our reservation for a Tuesday/Wednesday arrival.

Does anyone know if they actually had overwash (and reason to close the park) on the road over the December 21-22 weekend?

Just wonder when they started letting people back in after the closure.

BTW, we were able to go back to St. Joseph Peninsula State Park over the period, so we still had our Merry Christmas at the beach.

Last fall when we were there they closed the road overnight one night due to overwash, but we were not required to leave.

I have reservations there Next Friday the 27th, but the weather should clear out quickly Sunday night/Monday morning.we are only two hours away on MS gulf coast and my son is out duck hunting in Kayaks!

A few times when we've driven out to Pickens it's been partially covered with blowing sand. We've managed to miss the high water so far.

I was stationed aboard an aircraft carrier in Pensacola. Whenever a storm hit the Gulf, we had to head out beyond the barrier islands to keep from getting beat up against the sea wall. The road to Ft. Pickens was only about 3 feet above sea level. Seemed like it was always under water.

If your departure date was after they reopen - the reservations are still valid in my experience. You should get a call or e-mail asking if you want to cancel or come for the remainder of your stay.
