Las Vegas: Where to stay and where to avoid

Hello Fellow Travelers,

Wondering if anyone can advise us on places to stay in Las Vegas. Seems like there are areas to avoid so that info would also be useful. We have never been there and are planning a week in Vegas; we have a 45' motor home. How are the casinos for RV's? Any particular one you can recommend? There are lots of RV parks in Vegas that I read about in RV Park Reviews. Has anyone stayed at Las Vegas RV Park? If yes, what did you think of it? We'd like to be near the strip but don't even know if this is an option. We will also visit Hoover Dam and Lake Mead.

All advice would be welcome.

Thanks in advance,
Leslie & Stuart

Sam's Town is the only place we've stayed. (Twice.) But, it was handy. Inexpensive. Buffet & poker room are good. Free shuttle if you want to go downtown or to strip.

X2.. We like it because it's easy to get to the strip and there is a bunch of shopping on the way. One of the things we like about the location is that it's easy on and off the freeways to go anywhere in the area.

The Oasis is nice but beyond the south end of the strip. And not good news for someone who goes to Vegas for the Strip and not a nice destination RV park. It is 4 miles from the Oasis to the nearest mega resort Mandalay Bay with nothing in between. While it is 3 miles from Circus Circus to Mandalay Bay with a couple of dozen major resorts in between. Downtown is fun to visit but staying there is a non starter and the RV parks and casinos along Boulder Hwy are less than most tribal casinos in CA. For sports books and poker rooms there is nothing like the Strip. The 5 star Wynn and Encore are a 10 minute walk from Circus while a double deck bus line runs up and down the strip for around $8 per day if you don’t want to cab it. To get to Circus and not drive the Strip exit I-15 East on Sahara and turn right on Bridge Lane (Last light before the Strip) to a left on Industrial Rd. That gets you to Circus Circus Dr and the park. If all we are going for is Vegas and not the Dam or other sight seeing I don't bother towing a car from SoCal and let others deal with the traffic.
See you in a couple of weeks.

We have heard about the Oasis for years and just attended a rally there, we were sorely disappointed. It's pricey and the sites were not really big enough for our 36 to 42 ft 5th wheels and truck. Although it sits right next to the freeway there was no freeway noise. HOWEVER, it sits right under the flight path for a VERY busy airport, coming in or taking off (depending on the wind), it was really annoying.
We have stayed at the Las Vegas RV Resort and recommend it, while it is on Boulder Highway, it is nicely updated and has 24 hr security (as does Oasis). We have also stayed at Sam's Town, it has been taken over by KOA and we avoid them like the plague, too pricey for what you get. It will be interesting to see if the maintenance goes downhill like other KOA's.

If you are an Elks Lodge member the Boulder City Elks has a nice RV park. FHU and close to Hoover Dam and Lake Mead. A short drive into Sin City. You can enjoy the bright lights for a while, then come back out to dim lights. We should be in Thursday.

If you don't want to drive around in RV or toad and you can get close to the bus line, you can get a bus pass for 20.00 for 3 days. Bus runs 24hours a day. One day pass is 8.00. I stayed at Circus Circus recently but not at the RV park. CC is an older place but ok, not the Wynn or Trump, but a fraction of the cost. Bus stop right out front that you can take down the strip or to downtown ( Fremont Street, Gold and Silver Pawn Shop etc. ). You might stay somewhere like CC a few days then move out to one of the more scenic areas. Check out Red Rock conservation area for a beautiful drive just 20 minutes from town. Also, remember it can be hot! We got a 100 reading on our rental car there this past week! Like someone said, don't miss Fremont Street downtown. It has turned into quite a show.

I would 2nd Clark County Shooting Range. Very nice, safe, clean area North of the City.
Close to shopping, Costco, and Home Depot.

It is not what anyone envisions as a " shotting range " It is quite an amazing facility.

When we return to Vegas, it is the only place we will stay.

we are NOW in las vegas. it has been a few years since we've been here. I would tell you to see the strip for a night or two and then spend most of your time downtown. the downtown has become a great place to people watch and gamble.

Of course you don't try to drive your class A around....I hope not.

The park at Circus Circus is closed. That was a KOA, now that's the park at Sam's Town.

Road Runner RV park is just north of that on Boulder Highway.

Closer to the strip, there is the Oasis RV Resort.
