Hi All, hoping someone one here can give me some suggestions. I am looking to plan our summer vacation, and I would like to find a campground, with full hookups, on a lake. The area I am looking for is somewhere south of PA, and east of the Mississippi. Some of the things we are looking for are:
-campground on the lake, want to be able to walk to lake in minutes
-A decent size lake, with decent fishing, don't want to stay on a small 3 acre lake
-Full hookups
-swimming area close by
-not overly crowded
-other attractions nearby, maybe a water park, or amusement park, but not required.
-A decent restaurant or 2 near by.
-Pontoon Boat rental

Thanks in advance for any of your suggestions, I am hoping some of you in those states will have some good suggestions for me.

Hi all, wanted to thank you all for your suggestions, and also give you an update on what we decided and how it was. We ended up camping at the Piney Campground on the Land between the Lakes. We stayed on the dogwood loop, with full hookups, site 25. lake was no more than 50 feet from us, and it was a gorgeous campground, friendly people and nice wildlife. Fishing was OK as well, and weather was just like we were looking for, much hotter than PA was. Thanks to those who suggested it, was well worth it.

Look at the Tennessee State Parks and the Army Corps area in TN.

Island Resort Campground Ocean City Md area

Not a large lake, but beautiful. You can get a site right on the water. You also have access to launch a kayak or canoe that has access to salt water right at the cg. The place is very clean, has a nice store, clean pool and is run by great people. The place is quiet. Ocean City MD and Assateague Island are a short distance away.
Full timing it since July 2012

Lots of great spots meeting all your specs, except the PA reference, in Minnesota. The only problem there is whittling the number down to a manageable list for contact.

Plenty of campgrounds at Land Between the Lake in western Kentucky. Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley both have excellent fishing.

Anchor Down RV Resort in Dandridge, TN on Douglas Lake fits all of your requirements and it's only 45min from Gatlinburg as an added bonus. They have their own ramp, dock, slips, and swimming swimming area, and it's an extremely short walk to the water. 2 pools, a playground, sand volleyball, dog park, and it's probably the cleanest park I've ever been to. Every site is FHU, concrete pad and many of them have very unique stone fireplaces on the site.

Forgot to mention..... the lake is about 45 square miles in size. It's pretty huge.

First, thank you all for your suggestions, I am researching them now, and hope to make a choice soon so I can make reservations, and have something to look forward to so I can get thru this cold weather.

Second, Spoon, I know the lake, it is actually about 45 minutes from me, fish there a couple times a year. For vacation, we want to go somewhere farther south, someplace a little warmer than PA.

Third, if anyone is going thru PA, one of our favorite places to camp is Prince Gallitzin state park, they are starting to put some FHU sites in, but the campground is very nice, great location.

Finally, feel free to keep suggesting/commenting on other sites, I love to look at all the options. Thanks all.

Some COE campgrounds have FHU.

Any Corp of Engineers campground will be on a lake. Zero in on the Ozarks of Missouri and Arkansas.

There are a couple options I know of on Lake Champlain, too, but they're also not south of PA. (They're North Beach campground, in Burlington, VT, and Apple Island Resort in South Hero, VT.)

Depends where in PA you are... its south of Erie, PA!

Sorry, I must have skipped over it and thought he meant from PA to the south. My bad!

that is sort of picking nits IMHO. but Raystown Lake does suck getting to from the South however.

Dave, we really doubt if Defeated Creek would fit his style. However, it does seem to fit most of our requirements, except we didn't catch any fish in the small lake there, and its a long walk down to the pond. And all the noisy boats keep you awake at night. And not many resturants close by.

Raystown Lake in Entriken PA has everything except full hookups. You can pay $8 to have the honeypot come by though.

HUGE lake you can swim and boat in. They rent speed boats, fishing boats, pontoon boats and house boats.

There is a small waterpark on site.

There is a restaurant onsite.
