Looking for campground between Yosemite and Eureka - Updated

We are currently in Yosemite NP and will be heading to the redwood forests near Eureka, CA and have a couple days to visit in between.

We are looking for a neat place to stay for a couple of days along the route. Here are some more details about us:
  • We just spent a week in San Francisco so we don't really want to go back there on this trip.
  • We have a 45 foot motorhome with all the amenities so we don't need any hookups for the two days.
  • We have two girls 11 and 14 who we homeschool so educational opportunities are nice.
  • We love nature and science.
  • We are fulltimers in no hurry.
Any suggestions?

Update 5/28: We ended up staying at Aurora RV in Nice. I really liked it. Our site was plenty long and it was across the street from a park on the lake. We ended up renting a pontoon boat for a couple of hours at a nearby marina. It was about $70 all included for two nights with the Good Sam's discount.

Since you are fully contained, we love Westport/Union Landing (CA State Park) on Hwy 1 north of Ft. Bragg. You can park right on the bluffs overlooking Pacific Ocean. Awesome view! With a rig your size I would not recommend taking the road from there to Laytonville (to Hwy 101)...but would go back through Ft. Bragg and take Hwy 20.

We love the Aurora RV Park in Nice. Get one of the sites right on the lake. It is very peaceful. There is a grape arbor with grapes free for the picking, if you are there at the right time. Layna (sp) was the camp host(ess) when we were there. She is very helpful and sweet and will look after you like family. The rates are very reasonable, and the park has been remodeled over the last couple of years. Very nice...in Nice. Sorry, couldn't resist.

We stayed there about 4 years ago, so not remodeled jet that is why I stated just OK. Dick

Wow, great suggestions. I see Clear Lake coming up often. I'll check out the details and think we'll stay nearby according to your suggestions.

Gold Country up by Nevada City, Downieville and Sierra City are very interesting historic areas. Hwy 49 is curvy and beautiful.

Vineyard RV park is a regular for us. Very nice park in Vacaville. Close to Napa, very close to the JellyBelly factory tour. Lots of history to see in the Sacramento area. Benbow Valley KOA is a lovely resort, excellent (really excellent) restaurant at the Benbow Valley Inn next door. Just outside Garberville, and a good basecamp for the Redwood.

Nature & Science . . . Lassen National Park outside of Redding. Unlikely that all the roads in the park will be open due to the snowpack. If the trail Bumpas Hell is open, it is a miniaturized Yellowstone - without the crowds. The visitors center on the west side should be open & accessible from ReddIng, which is where you should leave that awesome motorhome of yours. Premier RV is your best bet, with JGW in Anderson next. Also want to visit Lake Shasta Caverns. And the dam tour. Take 299 to Eureka. Probably still have ongoing road construction. Avoid it during the weekends.

From Yosemite go west to I-5. Go north to Hwy. 20 at Williams. Go west on hwy. 20 to Nice which is about 1/2 way to Hwy. 101. Look for a Casino (I think it is called Robinson Rancheria Casino) on the right side of the road. It is just a large black top parking lot with a Casino. They use to allow RVers to park free. I would call them to make sure. From the Casino, continue west to hwy 101 then head north to Eureka. There RV parks along 101, just look in your Good Sam Directory.

You might enjoy spending a couple of days in Napa. Skyline Park and Napa Valley Expo are about the only places to stay there.
