Hi Everyone! My DH and I will be retiring in about 7-8yrs and are very interested in buying and RV lot that has a Casita with it. But where are these kind of lots located? We would like to invest before we retire so we don't have a payment in retirement. Location in the southern part of united states. just somewhere with nice temps in winter. Thanks Tara

"Would a Casita be big enough for 2 people".... like has been said, a "Casita" is designed for gathering, or for utilities, cooking, a place that gives a bit more room than the confines of an RV....such as a large den for TV viewing with friends, with large comfortable chairs, perhaps as a sewing/quilting room, a hobby area, a laundry/cooking area, or a combination of all.
The majority of RV lots in the Yuma Foothills area...have been developed with 4 distinct RV hookups (tho' only 2 are allowed to be used at any given time) along the outer edges of the property. The lots are in the 65'x120' or larger range. So, 2 RV's could use the lot, or 1 RV and 1 Park Model/mobile home, or 1 RV and 1 house, and in all circumstances, a central Casita could be utilized. If you are looking for room for guests that you cannot accommodate in your RV, you could place a Park Model or single wide mobile home on the lot.

Come to Yuma in the winter, see if it suits you.

I will try to be helpful by sharing our experience. WE are both 69.5, my wife is retired and I am going to retire next year. We have been going south in our MH for about 10 years for 2 to 3 weeks. I have not found a place we want to stay all winter every year, many nice places but none that we want to be locked into. MY wife's health has deteriorated badly in the last 3 years to the point we couldn't go this year. You can never tell what will happen in 8 years and you don't even know for sure where you want to be. My advise is to decide what you are willing to spend and put that money in an investment account where you will be earning interest instead of paying interest. When you are able to take the time, travel to the places you are interested in and see if you can find the ideal place. Then when you retire you will have the cash to buy what you want where you know you want to be. Wishing you the best of luck and hope your dreams come true!!!

P.S. Wish us luck too as we are still hoping to go next year.

Sincerely,

Between covenants and restrictions some people might prefer to just buy land and make their own pad. Make sure you understand the zoning if you do this, but you can end up with a place that will give you a lot more freedom to work on your RV (often not allowed in resort parks) and build something more than a casita. And no HOA (but probably real estate taxes).

YMMV

In many areas they are for day use only, not sleeping due to zoning regulations. We are not allowed beds or bedrooms in ours. However you can have a hide-a-bed and short term visitors. I am sure the rules vary quite a bit from area to area.

I have been looking at rv lots with casitas and the ones they call executive suites are really very nice. Bedroom, bath, kitchen and living area but omg, they are so expensive! We are thinking about just buying a home in the south somewhere and then rv when ever we want. But on the flip side if a person buys in a resort area where you can rent the site when not in use then that is a nice investment.

The only problem with renting AND using is that other folks generally only want to rent it when you want to use it, that is during the coldest winter months.
Do the best you can with what you have to work with.

I am not a snowbird, but have been thinking about a casita type lot further South of the New Orleans area. Of course this would put me in more danger of hurricanes. When it is cold (yes we do get cold sometimes) I would love to go South more.

What are you looking for in an RV lot? Realize that they come in a community and there will be monthly maintenance fees...

This is not true.....in the foothills of Yuma,Az are lots of RV lots for sale. They are in residential area and no monthly maintance fee. I just purchased one.

What are you looking for in an RV lot? Realize that they come in a community and there will be monthly maintenance fees. Depending upon the amenities offered those can be high. Plus you might find that you like traveling and not staying in one spot for a season or two. And you could discover that you simply do not care for where you bought and are stuck - at least for a while.

If you are nature lovers and enjoy state parks, check out the camping passes for each state you want to spend some time in. Not all states will have them. In New Mexico, the camping pass for non-resident is $225 and is good for one year. When you camp in a state park you will pay (nightly) $0 for no hook-ups, $4 for an electric hook-up, and another $4 for a sewer hook-up. Water is free. Most all have dumps and many have 50 amp service.

Well you should realize that when you upgrade to a motor home, your depreciation will make your eyes water and if you need to be careful with your money think it all through very carefully.Look at what happened in the last 8 years are you ok if it repeats that cycle. Not sure if if buying now is good or not,you may not even want to RV then.I would keep my money close to my chest and see what happens.

ok thank everyone for your responses, very helpful. This is the situation, we have lived all of our lives in this town. Our Sons are both married with beautiful families and did move away from here, good for them! in our retirement, God willing we would like to start a new adventure and live in another state, yet still be rather close to both our sons. we always thought we would love to sell our home and just upgrade to a motorhome and fulltime. But we want room for our families when they visit. We know it is 8yrs yet, but we need to get on some kind of track of what will be right for us. We are not rich by any means so we want to have the best retirement on a budget!!! Life is short and material things are not important to us, we want to enjoy and live life to fullest in retirement. We are nature lovers! Tara
