We were there last June in our TC (see signature for details). We actually encountered a Honda Prelude on our way there. I don't know if they made it all the way to Silver City. I seriously doubt if they did make it without any damage to under-carriage. It is dirt/gravel all the way with a few blind curves. The road worsens as you approach the town. The main thing to watch for are ORVs. It is a mecca for them. They were well-behaved as it is posted, if I remember correctly, to obey all off-road rules as to not endanger their access. A lot of them camp at pull outs along the road with trucks and ORV hauler trailers and some stay overnight at the hotel.
We came in from the Idaho side. We asked a local if we should exit via the Oregon side and he recommended going out the way we came in. He was a Viet Nam vet and had lived there for 30+ years. He was on his way to eat at the hotel.
Nice vistas on the way and you pass through some forest areas. The town's population have taken care of the buildings/homes where they live and you can walk around the dirt streets.
There is a camping area by a creek just outside of town that we fit in nicely. I think a bigger rig could make it in and turn around and/or pull through okay. It would be kinda tight for a real long rig.
It was one of the highlights of our 3 week trip in May/June of this year.
