Hoping to get somewhere warmer for a couple of months next winter now that I am retired. Am I asking too much for some sun, warmer than here (Southern Ontario)and the chance to catch something from the beach or a pier? Not fussed where we go, just warmer and more fish than here. Open to suggestions. Thanks.

Good surf fishing for flounder, blues and the odd red drum in September thru mid-November. January and February are pretty much dead except for the odd blue, the water is too cold. Things pick up in March.

Also the odd shark and sea trout.

Moll, There are 38 or so RV parks listed in Rockport alone. We love our park ancient oaks. Many are full but I know we just had a cancellation. Our rent is just $300 mo. Aransas Pass and Port Aransas are in the area too. Lots of good places to eat, friendly midwestern folks. The jetty @Port A can be tricky to fish in the shipping channel side because of current. I have seen big redfish, black drum, Gaftop catfish, sheepshead, pompano and whiting caught there. Caught a limit of Sheepshead there twice. I also fish for Sheepshead at Goose Island state park pier. No license required for any TX state park. Just had fried oysters last night that I harvested myself. Come on down!

It is either $47 or $48 for out of state salt water license in Florida. Not sure what it is for both. You can simply go on line, pay for it, and print it out. I get my Florida Salt water license every year down here, but I also use a pay pier once and while. There is a pay pier (no license required) that have specials on Thursday from 7pm to midnight. $8.00 to get on the pier and free bait!

If this helps: Hubby goes down to Sarasota area from Alberta at least 3 times a year for his fishing fix of 4 to 8 weeks depending since 2009. He gets an annual salt fishing license as cost for a few days not much more for annual he's remarked to me. He loves Venice Pier (told by countless folks don't even need a license on the pier but you would on the beach!!) for Shark fishing at night (600lb bull landed one year and lots of Sandbars back Nov/Dec '14), and mackerel, jacks, pompano, flounder, drum, odd sheepshead, ladyfish, redfish etc during the day as is available all over generally. He also loves the Jetties Nokomis, and sometimes goes out to Longboat area, there are lots of shore fishing areas within 45 mins of Sarasota in all directions right up to Anna Maria Island.

For his bass (and gar) fix he goes about 2 to 2.5hrs to Lake Okeechobee. He only gets a freshwater license for that about every other year as he generally loves the salt water variety more he "hopes" to catch,, and we get our Bass fix usually at Lake Havasu AZ in March.

Think he pays around $47 a year for each license, and we've found for the small difference in price over a week versus a year we tend to go that route mostly wherever we go. Wish we could get a NA wide annual license (oh well, no harm wishing). Generally have found we've got our best bang for our buck with Fla licenses over most other states we've visited.

FWIW, that's what has worked for us (oops, him - I'm just the caddy!)

Have a look at Jetty Park in the Cape Canaveral area. Nice campsites, long fishing pier within the campground and a beautiful wide sand beach suitable for beach fishing and swimming. They may have a limit on how long you can stay - not sure of that.

Thanks Uncle Grumpy. Any suggestions for campgrounds in that area and specific spots to fish?

We're in the Tampa bay area and it was 38 degrees last night. I would recommend you go as far south as possible. The Keys is the best place for warm weather AND fishing.

Florida panhandle if you want to fish in a sweatshirt. South of Sarasota if you would rather fish in shorts and a T-shirt.

Plenty of beaches, bridges, piers to fish from around Ft. Myers, Ft. Myers Beach, Pine Island, and Sanibel Island. I generally like to fish where I am not standing next to someone and where I don't have to pay to park.

While northern Fla is a little cooler than southern Fla, you can find both the Atlantic Ocean on the front of North Beach Camp Resort in St. Augustine and the Intracoastal Waterway (with pier) on the back end. Many snowbirds (and locals) fish on both. Camp on!

Hunting Island State Park, near Beaufort, SC. Great beaches where you can of course fish. Also has a very nice pier for fishing.
