Things to do in RGV

We may come to our daughters in April & stay about a week or so. They will be at work & granddaughter will be in school. What are somethings to do in the area? I know about the DonWes Flea Market. Other suggestions to get us out of their house during the day?

During the Winter, there are dozens of dances every month. Even in the Summer there are three or four a week around the RGV.

The hand operated Ferry is in Los Ebanos.

1. Hand operated ferry.
2. Call local high schools for mariachi concerts. Tickets can be hard to come by, though.
3. Events at McAllen Performing Arts
4. UTRGV NCAA sports.
5. RGV Vipers
6. Onion Fest
7. Borderfest
8. Flea Markets. Don Wes is mostly winter Texan. Mercadome near Alamo is much more interesting.
9. Delia's Tamales
10. Roma. -- about 25 miles west of Mission. Go to the birding overlook. There you have a great overlook of the river. Usually border patrol and Texas SHP there to visit with.

The RGV is not known as a destination area. Don't know of any that take a plane there from up north to vacation, unless they have family. With that said...

If you're looking for something to do with a grandchild the zoo, butterfly garden, and bird sanctuary are all good ones. You also have movies at Sunrise mall. Maybe even a trip out to SPI to spend a day at the beach building sandcastles and/or taking a dolphin cruise. While on SPI there is a turtle sanctuary that would also be good for a grandchild. Don't know what the grand folks would like if they were alone though.

Check with Rancho El Charco. Last I heard, they were closed.

In Mission, They have the National Butterfly Center. In La Joya they have a place called Rancho El Charco that you will like. San Benito has the Freddy Fender Museum. Anzalduas Park in Mission is nice. Go to the riverside club in Mission for a cruise down the River. While you are there, get one of their ginormous pork Tenderloin sandwiches. Visit Mission Bell for one of our many concerts.

For the patriotic, there is the Iwo Jima Memorial in Harlingen. The Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park explains the history of the area better than any politician or history book.

Bentsen Rio Grande State Park, Museum of South Texas History, South Padre Island has a World Birding Center location and sea turtle rescue. Any of the World Birding Center locations are worth the stop.

There is a nice museum in Edinburgh

Walks in the conservation areas - sorry names escape me but lots of birds to view

The Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville is fantastic. They have a lot of species that are normally only found in large zoos.

While you are waiting do a Google search for `Rio Grande Valley tourism' and read what the specialists recommend.
