Yellowstone camping - best spots?

My wife and I will be taking our daughter and two granddaughters to Yellowstone next year in our Class C motorhome - 24'...

Any recommendations/suggestions/advice for camping there?

We figure we do not want to stay in an all RV campground. Would prefer being in a more rustic outdoor spot. Do not need electric and can use the gennie a bit during the day to recharge the battery as needed, etc....

Thanks, John S.

Norris is a first come first serve campground. It is one of the two first come first serve campgrounds in the park that allow generator use. Mammoth is the other one that allows generator use.

With our 40' motorhome we've always stayed at Mammoth, Madison, Bridge Bay or just outside the park at Baker's Hole national forest campground. Yellowstone is huge so you might want to consider moving to another section halfway through your stay. It saves a lot of driving and will give you a chance to dump your tanks and refill.

X3 on Madison and Mammoth campgrounds if you want to stay inside the park. Madison is reservable, while Mammoth is first come-first served.

We were there last June/early July and it was very crowded, probably due to low gas prices and the 100 year anniversary of the National park Service. We didn't even try to stay inside the park, but instead used Bakers Hole Campground and Rainbow Point Campground north of West Yellowstone for the lower loop of the Park. For the Lamar Valley in the northeast corner of the Park, we used Colter Campground, just outside Cooke City. From there we drove the beautiful Chief Joseph Highway to Cody to begin the trip home.

Don't miss Grand Teton NP just 40 miles south of Yellowstone while you are in the area!

We stayed in Madison which is kind of centrally located. Mammoth Campground looked nice and the sites a little more isolated. Also, at Mammoth, there are a few stores and a restaurant and gas station. Plus, you're a couple of miles south of Gardener,Montana where you can get groceries or something to eat.Make sure you go inside the Inn at Old Faithful. It's supposed to be the largest log structure in the world and the lobby is beautiful. The food is good and decently priced.

I suggest Norris campground, but make a reservation NOW if you can. It is small, shaded, central to the park and has both rv and tent camping.

For what your asking for inside the Park there is Slough Creek, Indian Creek they are primitive but you must get there early, 9am at least. Slough Creek CG is close to the LaMar Valley where you'll have the best chance of seeing the wolves.

X2 Forest Service CG on road between Cody and East Gate. Absolutely spectacular drive. I'd recommend staying in Powell (town before Cody) at city rv park in town (FREE), a night or 2 in Cody and then a night in one of the Forest Service CG enroute to park. There were many and a few even had electric at the sites.

I like Madison(make Reservations) for touring the bottom loop. Then move to Mammoth Hot Springs to tour the top loop, including Larmar Valley. Mammoth is first come, so arrive mid morning to get a site.

With a 24' Class C, you have lots of options. Campgrounds in the park include those that take reservations and those that are first come first serve. Five of the seven first come first serve campgrounds do not allow generators at all. In addition to Baker's Hole outside the West entrance, there are a number of Forest Service campgrounds including some outside the North, Northeast and East entrances of the park.

Stayed at this campground 3 weeks ago.Eagle LOVED it. We had a site right by the river. some campers but we all spread out. Could use the generator a couple of times and didn't feel I was bothering anyone. River was loud enough to mask the gen.

We like to stay at Madison campground inside the park. Wildlife comes through the campground in evenings.
Bakers Hole Natl. Forest Campground is just north of West Yellowstone is another favorite.
