Almost all of us have had one of these trips! Well maybe Not! ๐Ÿ˜‰

It was the return leg from Alabama back to the central coast of California. Day six on Hwy 40 about 20 Miles east of Albuquerque NM. We heard a "BUMP" HMMM what was that? Everything feels good nothing in the mirrors! Ah something in the road, Had to be!
Well as we were going down the grade into town a nice Man in a very clean F350 got my attention and was making jesters to my trailer and that I should pull over! WTH! As I slowed the trailer jerked a little and I could see smoke from the right side tires! The RT front tire sidewalls had shredded with the tread remaining intact.
The tread had wrapped around the drum and axel with the middle tire running over it to make sure it was pulled in good and tight! I removed the tire and a hour later had the tread removed also! Now letโ€™s put the spare on! As I mounted the spare I noticed a "HOLE" that had worn into the side wall of the tire from something on the RV! Well it will get me off the road and I will replace it tomorrow! I forgot that tomorrow was a holiday! Well I could not find a tire store open the following day! SO knowing better I pressed on to Flagstaff AZ with the bad sidewall spare and a not so good middle axle RT side! It got hurt making sure the old tread was pulled tight on the front axle! Found a truck stop and put a 16" tire on the old wheel so I would at least have something to get me off the road if needed! As we drove my wife booked us an appointment online for 9AM at the local tire shop in Flagstaff (assuming we make it)! Well made it without any more drama and the next day and $1400.00 later we had SIX new tires on the rig and off we went!

Good to hear about minimal damage... seems most of the damage was to your wallet ๐Ÿ™‚

Might be time to get the bearings repacked too if it hasn't been done recently.
I love me some land yachting

Not always though. I lost a tread on one tire, damaged the fender flare and siding but tire never lost air, doubt a TPMS would have helped. The other two tires I lost I knew right away, one was thrown tread that I heard, the other was a flat due to road hazard.
I have a tire pressure system on both TV and TH and didn't help in my case...no excessive heat or pressure build up...my tires were just frinking old. Penny wise pound foolish in my case.

Yep, two blown tires(NJ to Mission Viejo)because of my stupidity...cost me about 1200 for six new tires...and dent to hell lower siding. Should have had the tires replaced before trip.

Habu great story I'm glad that everything worked out for you. I'm looking to purchase another spare myself so I'll have two. I've have had two trailer blow outs on two different trailers.

Not tires I would put on permanently but in an emergency situation look for walmarts to get a tire from if needed and no tire stores open.

Actually I noticed the sidewall on the spare of my 3950 had a bit of a scuff on it. I made sure the lift cable was really tight after that. If it gets worn again, I still have two of the original tires in my shop and I'll replace it with one of them.

Oh, I forgot to mention - we've had two breakdowns on I40 near Albuquerque!

The TPMS I had also monitors temperature so it may well have caught this. There is usually a lot of heat involved before tread separation.

Flagstaff will be remembered for many things... I fell in love with that town from back in the late 60s... Love that place and areas around it...
