Any clearance issues?

Hey all, I am looking to install a second A/C unit on my Denali 316RES. If I put a standard height Dometic on, the unit will stand 13'2". A Penguin cuts 3" off of that and I can shave another 1 1/2" by going with a Mach 8. I am leaning towards the Mach 8, but am mainly concerned with a height around 13' on the road. Do any of you have similar heights and have you had problems with clearances?

All input appreciated,

Mark

We put a second a/c on and got the Penguin II as it is low profile and would not raise the current clearance height. We are at 12'10" officially, but I go with 13'6" for safety, having not figured out a way to accurately measure the real height for myself.

Thanks to all. I guess I am getting a truckers atlas and ordering that 2nd a/c.

I'm at 13'2" and have only had two issues in two years. One was a tree branch at a SP that we visit twice a year, could not back into our sight as branch was too low, Ranger told us to cut the branch back, we did, no problem. Second was a low hanging telephone line not too far from our house. The front A/C caught it and pulled it down. Did not hurt the RV but did shut phone service off for a couple of homes. Line was replaced and now sits well above the RV. Just remember to watch signs and look up.

I'm just under 13' and keep an eye out for tree branches as well. One I missed took off my Jack antenna.

My rig is over 13 ft so I'm a little sensitive to that issue.

I carry a copy of the Trucker's Atlas. Roads they can safely travel on (height and width) are highlighted. I got the laminated pages version so I can lay out my travels thru a state using an erasable marker.

It also contains a state by state listing of all low clearances. FWIW, Texas seemed to have a ton of those. The NE also seems to have a bunch.

I got mine at a Pilot station.

I even bought some abs piping and a couple joints and cut the assembled unit just a little taller than my rig. I don't trust bridges that are off the beaten path...especially on gravel or dirt roads.

Does some one walk ahead of rig taking measurements?

When in doubt....go about

I had the Penguin II installed for the lower height and am still just over 13'. No problems so far but you learn to look up.

Oh, I also have the Rand McNally RV GPS. It allows me to program in the height, width, and weight of the rig. I added a POI file listing low bridges in the US just as backup.

We're 13'3". Big rigs are 13'6". Dunno where all you like to go, but suggest you get a GPS so you can program in your height to help keep you off roads where you won't fit. In Denver, there are bridges on I-25 with low clearances on the edges and trucks gotta run the right 2 lanes. If you get off the beaten path, you gotta be careful.

I downloaded an app called Allstays Camp and Rv. You can put in filters and they'll show up on the map for some pre-trip route planning.

My 5vr is 13' 4" (actual measured height)

We don't use Interstates unless we HAVE to.

Travel mostly secondary/backroads as much as possible.

Come across s few bridges/overpasses that were too short. So we used an alternative route.
Usually the 'signs' are long before so one has time to go different way.

Couple of times we came upon some that didn't/weren't marked ahead of time.
So we backed up/turned around and went on our way.

No big deal to me.......

More overhead clearances issues in CGs and going down town/city streets so pay attention and LOOK UP!

I'm a little over 13', and have no problem in Texas NM and Colorado. I have one underpass I do have to watch, but seems to clear ok. I did put a low clearance A/C on when I added 2nd. A/C

we are 12'-10" and keep an eye out for anything under 13'-6". Had to reroute in NY state whe we turned on a road that said 12'-2" max. height. A couple in East Texas are under 12'.

On highways that feature older bridges you could find some bridges with a 13'6" height. My trailer is just over 13' so I am always watching bridge height but have yet to have a problem. I was at a Pilot truck stop getting fuel at the auto islands and I was just a few inches to tall to get under the overhang.

Mine sits at 12'-10" and have had no problems. Just watch signs, etc for low bridges.
