Generator break in?

Does a brand new generator need a break in period? The genny in our new Attitude (5500 on an) quit after running 30-45 minutes. Would not restart, when I opened the door to the compartment it was very hot. It did flash codes but the factory paperwork was not included in our information packet. Plenty of gas in the tank, less than an hour of run time. Another genny thread suggested fuel pump problems. Did it just get too hot and shut down? I'll try restarting this morning and running with no load and see what happens.
Thanks
Dwight

Be very careful leaving the compartment door open as well. I can attest to the fact that things in the wind can find their way into the bottom side of the generator and take out the cooling fan. I had a rag get caught up in my from somewhere last summer while setup with the compartment door open, sitting inside when generator shut off, code showed unexpected shut down. Onan dealer found rag in generator. $650.00 dollar lesson. They are designed to stay closed, the generator is a combination air and oil cooled, high heat does not hurt them.

Sometimes it does just get too hot in there, for whatever reason. I've had mine quit for no reason, and then I see that it seems pretty hot in the compartment. I open the compartment door, and never have any other problems with it.

I had trouble with my Onan with just 2.5 hrs on it. Took it to a cummins dealer in Butte, Montana. turned out it was a bad fuel pump. Seemes to be a common problem with them

If your frig is on, it has a switch - (Auto) or (Gas) just switch it to gas. Oil level is deceiving it may look good but if you even a bit low it's not going to run right.

When I said genny door I meant the compartment door. I did not run it without the front panel on.

when you say generator door are you referring to the front cover of the generator or the compartment where it is mounted? If the former, then I'm sure it overheated, that's part of the cooling system, if the later then it should have no affect.

I agree. If the RV compartment door open all get is more noise.

Make sure there are no obstructions under the unit where it exchanges air. On our first TH the factory goobers only cut out half of the floor panel for the gen and it would only run about 30 min and shut off. (overheat)

Yes - there is a.break in covered in the owners manual, plus monthly schedule recommendations. I'd just seen the other thread and wonder if yours is t also a fuel pump issue. If it's under warranty I'd get them to handle it for you.

Keep us posted...Onan, seems to me, has a very good reputation whether it be gas, LP or diesel fueled generators.
