Pulling with a full load of Water

I know we always want to top off the water as close as we can to where we will land, but how far is too far to pull with 110 gal of water and a loaded TH?

For me, loaded with water I'm at +/- 15,500. My truck can pull 17,100 and the trailer max is 16,500.

For me, it depends on where we are going. My rig (2006 21ft Attitude)has a 100 gallon fresh water tank and I tow with a Chevy Z71 (with rear air bags) It is right at the max towing capability when loaded and my tanks are located over the axles.

If going to dez (just 2 hours away), it is filled. If going to beach (an hour away), it is also filled. If going to Mammoth or further (5+ hours away), we wait and fill up in town or at the rest stop.

For me, every extra pound I don't pull is worth it and required. And yes, I should go to a bigger truck. But the Tahoe does fine on flat and slight hills (80% of my towing), even with water. It's just the steep, long grades (20% of my towing) that it struggles with.

When I had a toy hauler, I hated driving with full tanks - the truck was sluggish (gasser)

That means u didn't have the right truck.

Level of comfort / aggrvation/decreased fuel economy dictates how far one is willing to travel with full tanks.... everyone has different levels of tolerance.

Hauled the trailer from Glamis, CA to Prescott, AZ last week and it was so darn windy I filled it before leaving. The trailer tows like a dream in heavy winds with 150 gallons of water in it.

Now I have to find some new places to ride and camp or the trailer is going to a new home. 🙂

Not exactly sure where (or what for that matter) you'rd riding, but Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Heck, the entire West, has great riding. If you're just a Sand hound then you're much more limited.

Your not going to find much of anything with hookups. I believe Cisco Grove has electric hookup but not a lot of variety in terms of trails/terrain. Basically a logging road up to Fordyce lake with a couple of side roads. Decent campground though with nearby fishing. A little further up the hill out of Truckee is Boca/Stampede/Prosser reservoirs with a lot of great trails but no hookups that I am aware of.

Stoneyford OHV (north of Clearlake) also has a lot of good trails but not any hookups.

I made a round trip from Az to Indiana. Tank full both directions. I never leave home without a full load. Never know what may happen along the way. It the trailer won't travel without a full load I wouldn't want it. LOL Mine almost fell on the rd once. Had to rebuild the flimsy Lippert mounting. But my trailer was 10 yrs old @ the time. Now it is solid & I always carry 122 gal when leaving.

As for towing with water my trailer holds 150gal. For a short <~200mi 2-3 night trip we only need about half that and will fill at home before leaving. If we are staying somewhere a week or so and need a full tank I'll fill it closer to our destination. Our week long trips are usually a lot further drive.

Yes, we found the frog pond hot spring and did some swimming. Kids loved it

I personally don't like towing with water. So far every where I go I have a water stop on the way. I was one of those people whose tank fell, but it didn't damage the trailer. I don't know about you, but my tanks were supported by 2" angel iron. Pretty cheesy setup if you ask me. The tanks are a T shape and were supported on the edges thus the extra 1000# were resting in the middle of the tank all supported by the extreme edge of the tank.

Yea the way they supported the tanks was ridiculous. I don't think they could have half asked it any worse if they tried.

We always fill the water tank (110 gallons) before leaving home. Just add it to the weight calculations...
