FWIW many states are vigorously pursuing individuals who are licensing out of state to avoid paying in-state taxes. It's not the cop who stops you that determines anything, it will be the DMV or the state department in charge of tax fraud that does the chasing.

All you say is true, and you would be invited to prove all that you say is true in court. The simple matter is that, generally speaking, people who license their vehicle in one state and live in another do it to avoid taxes. From what I understand the state usually wins if an individual is taken to court in this instance. This has come up before many times.

FWIW I discussed this with the salesman when I bought my toyhauler out of state. He said that some people do the Montana LLC thing and get away with it and some get caught with a resultant very large fine and back taxes/interest. He said it just depended on the state and how determined they are to get your money.

There's no law in my state that say's you must register here. But if there is in your state, and you get stopped, the registration says the trailer belongs to "Blank Blank Holdings" in Montana, How is the cop going to prove that you own it? Is it illegal to tow someone elses trailer in your state? Or park someone elses trailerr in your yard? You could be leasing it, for all they know. You could even rite up a lease agreement.

akcooper9, Sorry I haven't been around to respond till now, but , yes you can register all your vehicles to your holding co. Call Mountain States Consulting at 406-363-4355 and they will take care of you. I have nothing to gain here, just a satisfied customer. Any way to save taxes is a good thing. My Denali dually cost me almost $5000 in sales tax and registration in Rhode Island because I didn't know about this, the TH cost $189 for a one time registration fee. You can't beat that!

So a few years back, Colorado changed the way they do taxes on vehicle registration. Where it used to basically be a flat fee plus sales tax on a new vehicle "purchase Price".......NOW it's based on some goofy calculation of MSRP or the "value" of the vehicle, and GVW plus the normal "fee." And instead of it being just the first year, they tax you each year on the current "value."

While that annual fee and tax ticks down over the course of several years, this year I'm looking at well over a thousand dollars for taxes and registration for the new KZ MXT.

For many of you in higher rate states the tag fee is an excise tax and therefore deductible on your Fed Income Tax. In TX they're "fees" and not deductible. We've lived in several states over the years and our total state tax liability in all has been about the same. Here in TX they get you on property tax, highway tolls, and many others even though we have no income tax. Bottom line is the govt will get theirs - one way or the other. 😉

Annual inspection? For what?

In the People's Republic of Oregon we get hosed on all kinds of things, including up to 11% income tax! but the registration fees are small, we have NO sales tax, no annual "inspections", no personal property tax, and no other annual fees. I can't imagine paying the state $400 or $600 year after year for a truck or trailer I already own... Personal property tax is an odd concept. Of course, since Clinton outlawed logging, we can't afford things like cops, roads and schools for our kids either. We can barely afford all our socialist welfare programs...

Looking at the scale... 19,000 is the jump to the $200 mark and that's what the registration bill has on it. As far as a plate and insurance charge they are separate and the insurance does not go through the state.

Seems a bit high to me...
I just did the Texas annual registration on my 43ft 18,000lb GVWR triaxle toyhauler in April and it was $125.50. Here's the details straight from the DMV receipt:

PLATE STICKER: 110.00
CNTY ROAD BRIDGE ADD-ON FEE: 10.00
CHILD SAFETY FUND: 1.50
AUTOMATION FEE: 1.00
MAIL IN FEE: 1.00
Electronic Processing (NON-REFUNDABLE if Tax Office Declines   Application): 2.00
Subtotal: 125.50
Total Charge Amount: 125.50

As a side note, the reg on my truck was 126.50 but I was shocked at how cheap the annual inspection on it was the first time I did it. It's an F-450 Diesel and cost $12.00. Heck, my SUV costs 40.00...
