Grocery Shopping on the Road

I was shopping at Safeway today and had to give them my loyalty card at the checkout. When I pulled up my virtual card on my phone, I noticed lots of other loyalty cards and thought what a strange lifestyle we live.

I've shopped at dozens, if not hundreds, of grocery stores large and small throughout the country and usually enjoy the experience.

I was wondering if you have your favorite stores throughout the country? Have you found any gems? My favorite has been Wegmans in Pennsylvania but I love Publix in Florida and Safeway in California.

Stew Leonard's tops them all.

But it is a LOOOONG way from Texas.

We use base commissaries if we are near a base. Not that great on prices or selection, expect for meat in my opinion.

We've also stopped visiting Costco or Sam's Club except for things like tires, vehicle/ RV batteries, etc. We just don't have the storage as full-timers to make large bulk purchases of paper goods or food.

Publix is my favorite of chain stores, we like Kroger in Texas.

Walmart has one BIG advantage. I know what they have, where it is located and can get in or out of a store quickly. Be that store in New Hampshire, Florida, or New Mexico.

Are they really worth it. I have been in for 18 years and I seldom shop at commissaries because the suck in every way, selection, quality and service and the price is not that much lower if at all.

We miss Publix. They were our store when we lived in Atlanta.

One afternoon, a thunderstorm caused a power outage in the area. We went to our then regular grocery store. They stopped us at the door, saying they were closed.

We saw lots of cars at Publix, so we went there, We were greeted by an employee with a flashlight. "We know your shopping is important. I will guide you around the store for as long as you want to shop."

We selected our purchase. At the check out were more smiling and enthusiastic employees with calculators and cash boxes. Cash? No problem. Check? No problem. Credit card? They politely asked if they could write the information down, have me sign the slip of paper, and run the charge when the power was restore.

THAT is how you run a business!

I remember few outstanding grocery stores in our travels ... High bar of expectation.

Publix is my favorite grocery store.
We are now in New England and I tried a Market Basket - the cheapest prices and the largest and most varied selection of food I have come across.
I only shop at Walmart if nothing else is available. The variety is limited, the stores are usually crowded, and their fresh vegetables are usually lacking.

We just shopped at a brand new Market Basket store near Plymouth, MA and were impressed with the quality, selections, and pricing. We also shop at Super Walmarts a lot for consistency, as well as Price Chopper/Market 32, Wegmans, Winn-Dixie, Publix, Kroger, and other regional stores. Finding our way around locations that are new to us is always an adventure. 😉

We have found City Markets in the SW to have good delis and produce sections. Also like Sprouts for some specialty items. Safeway for good overall grocery shopping. We avoid Walmart like the plague.

Its just WALMARTs for us. I always want to know where the closest Walmart and Lowes is anyway. Both of these two stores can support 99% of our RV CAMPING needs... AMAZON is where we mail order most items from with their two day delivery.

We don't do the RV TRAVELING thing...

Once I hit the southern states I found I liked Kroger Grocery stores and was very happy to discover Publix stores.

Funny having lived in the Midwest all my life I really didn't know there were so many other chain grocery stores specific only to an area.

My first rude awakening a month after hitting the road full time?

I asked a fellow camper if they knew where the nearest 'Jewel' was. The poor man's eyes just glazed over as if he thought I was from another planet. :B

Wegmans is an excellent place to shop.

If you want unique, go to Jungle Jim's International Market in Fairfield OH, north of Cincinnati.
