62 be very very good to you mph

So yesterday I gave it a try. 62 mph at about 2200 rpm. Engine was very quiet. Hardly had to change lanes except sometimes for slow merging vehicles. Took a little longer but still averaged about 50 for 400 miles. Was especially comfortable when there were three lanes. There were usually trucks going the same speed that I used as traffic blockers. Haha. I would stay just ahead of a slow truck and that kept traffic off my bumper. Heading for Petersburg Va today and Maine by Fri or Sat.

Listen... I am in Richmond... 95 is complete CLUSTER downtown (Bridge Construction is closing lanes randomly)... go around on either 295 (if you are going stay on 95 up to the NorthEast)... or as in another topic... take a left at Petersburg or South Richmond and go out 64 to 81 North... then come across southern VT and NH to Maine. I am from Boston, but got deported to Richmond 5 yrs ago, we do this run 3 or 4 times a year and always take the western route.. it add about 90 miles, but takes about the same or less. Traffic in DC, Philly, NY, Hartford... can delay 3 or even 4 hours!! (and cause that little vein on the side of your head to pop out!)

Good luck,
Mal
thanks for the info Mal. I do intend to head west to 81 and will not go into Richmond proper tomorrow.

That's our average speed too in zones with speed limit 65 and higher...fully agree our--our mpg is optimized. We aren't in a hurry! Our experience with other traffic is about the same...those that drive faster will be in the outer left lanes and we have the right lane to ourselves. On two lane roads that generally have lower speed limits this works especially great. Depending on terrain, weather, etc. we average 8-10 mpg.

For us fuel economy is fantastic at 55mph, but the other drivers are not. When on the highway we tend to do around 62mph, which is a good compromise between fuel economy and not getting rear-ended by people paying more attention to their phones than the road. That said, I'll travel the backroads when they are not overly windy because the scenery is often far more interesting that that of the highways and 55mph is the common speed limit.

..Funny you should mention that speed.

That also happens to be the maximum speed my everyday driver vehicle, Ford Fusion Hybrid, can run in EV mode (electric vehicle mode). You get incredible mileage if you can keep it to that speed or lower.

Every day, for my 26 mile commute to work, I set the cruise control at 62 mph, so it can run in EV mode as much as possible. If I can keep it to 62 or less to utilize EV mode, it'll average 48-49 mpg pretty easily. In a few rare cases, it went up over 50 (average, for a 26 mile drive).

Yes, indeed, 62 be very good for mpg for us. 🙂

I'm with you. Our Knight is perfectly comfortable and safe up way over 70. I'm most comfortable at maybe 68, maybe faster.

I also like 62 MPH. With toad @ 10-11 MPG and without 12-13 MPG.

As for the MPG, it all depends on your engine rpm, gear setup in the tranny, and in the rear end.

This is true in a no wind condition. Between Van Horn, Tx. and Elpaso I encountered 35 to 50 mph headwinds and got 4.8 mpg. Normally get around 8 mpg at 65 mph. Don't think you can set up a gear ratio or a perfect rpm for those conditions.

I like 63 as that is my shift point to 6th....if in a hurry I throw caution to the wind, put the pedal to the metal and go for 65.

Generally best mileage seem to be around 1800 rpm. 63 in 6th or 55 in 5th.

I'm more of a RPM driver and 2500 on the interstates out works best for time and fuel usage. Just by chance its also right around 62 mph.

I kept it @ 55 last season and this season I tried 60 and what a difference in ride and handling that's fast enough for us...

The truck speed limit and vehicles towing in California is 55, I run 57-58. Otherwise, I usually hang in at 60 mph in all other states. I like easy driving, I try not to impede traffic. I'll run 75 down hills just for the momentum. If the stated speed for normal traffic is 75 or 80 (in AZ, NM and TX), I'll move up to 65 but it's rare for me to run that speed.
