Goodyear G670 Blow out

I just wanted to share some information about my recent tire blow out. these tires were the original tires on our 'O6 Hurricane. The DOT date on the tire was 3305 meaning they were manufactured in the 33 week of '05. I never had a problem with any of the tires until this blow out in September of 2017. These tires lasted 12 years. I do store the motorhome out doors but since we purchased it in 2010, We've kept tire covers on while in storage. There were about 27,000 miles on these tires.
Looking closely at this tire after the blow out, I think I can actually see what happened and why the tire gave way (other than its age). I believe that throughout their life, I did run them under-inflated too much, Wearing the outsides of the tires.

Notice in this first picture that you can still see siping on one side of the tire (top side in the picture):

The second picture shows the other side of the tire where not only is there no siping but there are actually stress cracks in the tire from being under-inflated:

The third picture shows where I think the blow out began. The tear looks to have started at the stress cracks?

After a little research, I decided to replace all 6 tires with 6 more Goodyear G670's even though they are expensive. I chose these tires for 3 reasons. 1) they have an additive that makes the tire last longer than a regular tire specifically for an RV application where it gets stored most of the time. 2) Most other tires of this size are truck tires and are designed for a higher air pressure (110 PSI) making the ride rougher. 3) They are made in America.
I was able to get the 6 tires from simpletire.com for just under $2700 shipped. Warning: most tire shops can't balance these tires.

New edit:
I want to make it clear that I am far from an expert in this matter but I feel like I learned something in this experience that I wanted to pass along to others. I thought that the life expectancy of most tires was 10 years and that since i had them covered with tire covers i could squeeze out another year or two. I knew that they needed to be changed out soon but honestly, the tires still looked great at a glance. However, I should have looked closer at all the tires before the blow out. This was the only tire of the 6 that had stress/heat cracking on it. And yes, These tires are prone to "rivering" Where the outsides of the tire wear faster than the insides. Its hard to notice. You have to pay attention to the siping on the outsides of the tire. If it goes away, the tire is getting worn.
In no way am I trying to give the G670 tire a "glowing review" because mine lasted 12 years as someone posted, but I think its very relevant to this case and it is interesting. I mean, if you look at the other five tires, and they looked pretty **** good! no sidewall cracking and still lots of tread. That said, I will never go a day over 10 years on any tires on our motorhome ever again. Less than that if they are cheaper tires.

I've always been a Goodyear fan, and even got to ride on the blimp years ago. But after 2 blowouts on the SAME day with less than 5 year old GY G670's, I had them all removed. I'm not going with Goodyear on my motorhome any longer. Been happy with these Hercules tires so far. Might look at other brands and Hercules when it's time to replace again.

Gy 670 are the worst t.v. tire ever made. But 12 years is too long for any t.v. tire

My motorhome (2001) came with Goodyear 19.5". One nail (not a bad tire) and one blowout...a hole, maybe the size of a half-dollar just east of El Paso on I-10. Of course, the inside rear tire, drivers' side. Bad tire? Who knows? about 4 years old at the time. (Sidebar: Coach-net had me back on the road within 2 hours. Lucky me...the guy arrived 15 minits after my phone call to Coach-net.)

Been running GY ever since. my 20,500# frame (Ford)....I run 80 psi in all 6 tires. GY customer service says my weights (supplied by a scale) 80# is fine...I could run less should I choose to.

ALL tires have problems somewhere, sometime. Goodyear bashers, Michelin bashers abound here. I personally ignore them.

I sure hope this post was meant to be a GLOWING review of the Goodyear tire. 12 years old and still going? That's completely awesome since the average life expectancy of an RV tire is about 7 year. The fact that you were willing to put your life on the line driving on 12 year old tires is a whole different topic.
Glad to hear you are OK and it sounds like replacing them with another set of Goodyear's was also a good choice.
What I post is my 2 cents and nothing more. Please don't read anything into my post that's not there. If you disagree, that's OK.
Can't we all just get along?

Mark52,

What position was the tire that blew? How fast were you driving and what was your experience?

Hopefully no damage to your RV.

MM.

The tire that blew was the rear inner tire. I was only doing about 40 MPH at the time. I was diving on a winding mountain road up at about the 7000 foot level (and of course out of cell phone reception). I ended up putting the spare on myself which was no easy task, even with hydrolic jacks. I'm sure being at the 7k foot level increased the pressure in the tires some but obviously it was bound to happen sooner than later.

My experience with 19.5" Goodyear G670 tires is that the front tires will wear the outside edges excessively if inflated to the rated pressure on the sidewall. (80 psi) On my 18,000 GVWR F-53 Class A rig, new shocks and using 90 psi and it seems to resolve the problem although making the ride a little rougher. IMO if you are driving an RV on 12 year old under inflated tires with the cord showing, what you experienced it not a Goodyear problem.

!2 years out of a set of tires is fantastic and speaks well of Goodyear. The OP's comment that the tire showed signs of under-inflation which indicates that the tire would have probably blown no matter who the manufacturer was.
Under-inflation builds up heat and will eventually cause any tire to fail. Don't forget if this tire was under-inflated it means the other dual(if it was on the rear) was carrying way more than it's share of the load and is probably damaged as well.

I have a very low opinion of Badyears due to their rivering problem.

7-8 years is the max life of tires regardless of how they look. And some should be replaced at 5 years. Don't wait 12 years on the new tires.

FYI none of your pictures came out....I, too, ran GY for years but after two started rivering and a blowout last year, I replaced them with Michelin's. I've had excellent wear and ride with the steer Michelins. Glad you replaced all of them, you were on borrowed time....Dennis
