Kiwkee steps just clicking..

Steps suddenly won't open. Pulled the fuses and all was good, then opened the door and steps worked only one time again.
Now when I open the door I only hear a faint clicking sound coming from the box under the steps and they won't extend.

Any ideas?

We just returned from 2 months in Fl. On the way down we had snow, sleet, etc. and they were salting the freeway in In. like crazy. The motorhome sat for 2 months while in Fl. When we went to leave steps would not go in. Motor tried for a second then stopped. I lubed them up, pushed on them while wife opened and closed the door. Eventually I got them freed up. Just saying, they may be rusted up and too tight for the motor to move.

It might be as simple as bad/low house batteries. Charge them up or plug in, if while plugged in your stairs still do not do anything but click then I am wrong.

When I had that problem a few years ago, I ordered a new motor, while waiting for it I removed the old one, took it apart cleaned it and greased it at the lube points. Than took needle nose pliers and tweaked the terminal prongs at the connector and added dielectric grease, put it all back together and it is still working good. still have the new motor in box, might try that first.

I had that problem several years back turned out to be the four wire connector was corroded and would not pass enough current to run the motor.

The connector looks like the four way trailer connector take it apart spray contact cleaner on both sides reconnect then do it again.

Caution when working on the steps if they suddenly start and you are in the way the steps will win that battle every time.

I have also had to replaced the motor but that was a different symptom.

Kwikee is NOT out of business. Never has been. They are the largest supplier of Electric steps for motorhomes. They were purchased by LCI and operate under LCI as Kwikee. Doug

On my steps I removed the motor and linkage assembly because when opening the steps the motor kept running for an additional 4-5 seconds. I had watched a couple of videos on You tube and it seemed simple to do. After removing the motor I decided to take it apart. inside was the main gear which had three cushioning plastic clumps, actually only two as one was ground up and about gone. probably my issue I thought. I found a motor on Amazon for $49 that looked the same. Two day shipping and installed it in about 30 minutes and it is perfect again.

The clicking maybe a stripped gear inside the motor - there are a number of posts about how to replace the gear but you can replace the entire motor for about $60 on Amazon.

When our Kwikee Steps motor failed we bought a replacement from AM Equipment. They manufactured the motor on our steps and were a lot cheaper than getting the part from Kwikee.

look at the amber light under the steps. IF it goes on and off when you open the door the motor is probably bad. While opening and closing the door with the engine running. hit the motor with a hammer, If the motor has a dead spot that usually frees it up so you can replace it. Doug
