looking for a vehicle to tow.

Just starting a search for a " toad " Wanting something to tow behind an '03 Fleetwood on a F53 chassis with the V10 gas motor.
Thinking of a Geo tracker - though I don't really know why. I guess there are other makes just as practical. I'm thinking the 4WD might be handy. One reason I'd consider a Tracker is that I should be able to flat tow it without worrying about the transmission. I'm thinking that even the auto. trans ( in a 4WD )has a transfer case that can be shifted into neutral. True?
Obviously, I'm not style conscious, as evidenced by thinking of the tracker. I don't need this vehicle for any other use other than grocery runs and local travel after arriving at the campsite. I don't want to spend a lot of money.
Suggestions ?

Certainly the Wrangler for the best of all worlds, but like I've said before, your toad should be your DD also, to be cost effective. With that said, the newer JK series are also very highway friendly and a far cry from the days of old.

I used to tow a Honda CRV but I gave it to my daughter and just purchased a 2007 Chevy HHR. It is very light and tows well, also gets 32 mpg so it is great for side trips.

The Chevy Trackers make excellent tow cars. We have had three of them.
The latest model available would be a 2004 model. That was the last year they made them. The V6 4wd models have good power and are towable with an automatic transmission. Our current Tracker has 160,000 miles and still runs like a top.

The Tracker, or it's brother, the Suzuki would be PERFECT. They're light, about 1800# and tow easily. Another choice would be an older VW bug. These are all easily worked on and provide dependable transportation. I towed a Suzuki for years..a little under powered for the hills and mountains of California, Montana and Colorado, but doable. I even replaced the engine after 200,000 because it wouldn't pass smog in California. The engine swap including engine and labor was less than $1500.....Dennis

Just set up a 2013 KIA Soul Base model. Six speed manual with FWD. Only KIA model that can be towed four down. We used a Blue OX tow bar and base plate. Breaking and lights we used a SMI Box. Towed behind a 2013 Itasca Sunstar 30T. Pulled it home about 30 miles the other day and it towed great.

When we tow we turn on the SMI Box, shifter in natural, key to Assc, release parking break.

If you "don't want to spend a lot of money" on a tow car I assume you want to have a car that gets good gas mileage and will also be used as a daily driver so you don't have to buy a dedicated tow car. If you are thinking along this line a small manual 5 speed that weighs less than 3000 lbs would be a good choice for a gas MH. I would look a a used Corolla, Accent, Versa, Fiesta, etc. Find something you would want to use as a daily driver then check with the Dingy Towing Guide for the year vehicle you are interested in and verify that it can be flat towed. These cars will get 40 mpgs on the highway and offset the 8 mph you get on the MH.

Look up the vehicle you are interested in towing.

For example Honda Pilot is flat towable in the 2012 and previous models - but must be on a trailer for 2013 and newer.

In 2008 and 2009 - Ford changed the transmissions and many of their vehicles are now flat towable.

Tracker's big brother the Suzuki grand Vitara. We have had several Suzukis. Easy to tow and setup just like the Tracker.

FIAT 500 flat tows with no mileage on odo.

Recommend turbo or Abarth for performance advantage over standard 500.
Love our Abarth Cabrio (convertible). 160 hp turbo I4, 0-60 in 6 seconds, 35 - 40 mpg highway!

Sam, I'm towing a 2014 Honda CRV 4X4 all four wheels down. 2014 is the last year Honda made transmissions to be towed with all 4 wheels down. Honda changed transmissions in the 2015. I like the CRV because it's light, good on fuel, and hands down the best steering vehicle I owned in a long time. In the past I've towed Saturns and Toyotas all four wheels down. Hope you find a vehicle that suits your needs.
