Seeing how our son has reached the age where he doesn’t want to come on our adventures anymore, we decided it was time to lose the jackknife sofa. Not that he used it for sleeping, but that was where he sat while traveling. We make videos of our outdoor adventures (hiking, kayaking, ect.) and we wanted something more comfortable to relax on while editing the videos after a day of filming them. For the longest time we wanted to have a reclining sofa in our rig, but the few that we found for RV’s were too large and way too expensive. We used to bring a couple hassocks to put our feet up on, but that involved more storage space while traveling.
The solution for us was to find a reclining loveseat that would fit in the sofa’s space, not weight a lot and be versatile enough to get through the RV’s door. Well we found that at a furniture store in the clearance section. We offered them even less than the final marked down price and they accepted. Yes we are quite aware that they didn’t lose any money on it. Lol
The problem was finding a way to mount it in the rig as we didn’t want the thing to become a projectile if God forbid we had an accident. We decided seeing how the loveseat was not made for an RV and we had no intention of ever letting anyone sit there while it was moving, why not utilize the seatbelts, so that is exactly what we did. We mounted wood spacers between the wall and the loveseat to keep the loveseat out from the wall so it could still recline to a point, then strapped the seatbelts around the metal frame of the loveseat to hold it in place.
We have since come back for an adventure with the rig and everything worked out perfectly and we couldn’t be happier with our decision. The weight difference was very slight, so we’re not worried about the slide and we are way below on our CCC when we checked it at the scales. The jack knife sofa is covered and in storage. If and when we ever sell the rig, we’ll reinstall it again.
We made a video showing how we did it if anyone is interested in seeing it, but remember, this is no longer a safe place for anyone to sit in while traveling.
