Towbar/tab failure

We had a moment of excitement recently, pulling out of an RV park onto US 1 in Lexington, SC. Looked in the side-view mirror, only to see our toad peeking out, looking like it wanted to pass us!

Turns out, our 12 year old tow package had a failure: one of the tabs protruding from the front of the car that interlocks with an arm of the towbar broke off, leaving the car attached by only one arm of the tow bar. This allowed the car to swing more widely, side-to-side, which is exactly what I saw looking at it in the rear view camera.

We were fortunate in many ways, one of which is that we were able to stop without any damage to either vehicle, by allowing the coach to coast, allowing the car to 'snuggle' up against the rear of the coach, and to then come to a stop. We unhitched the car, and drove it the rest of the way home.

The tow unit was a Blue Ox, Aventa II, towbar that mated with a baseplate for a 2001 Acura MDX. Here are some photos of the failed tab -- note especially the hairline crack on the intact tab. It's in exactly the same place as the break point of the broken on.

We reported this incidence to Blue Ox, who has responded as well as one might hope. They are shipping a new set of tabs, and paying to have us ship the old one back to them for inspection.

Just out of curiousity, did you drill those extra holes. I've never seen BlueOx tabs with those holes. It appears they caused the weak spot which in turn caused the failure. I just received my new tabs from BO. Great people. I replaced mine as I noticed some ovaling on the attachment holes which made me nervous. Now I've got new ones as we get back on the road this Sunday...:)...Dennis

X2. I carry 2 extra pairs, none of them have a secondary hole as shown.

Thanks for posting that. I will be looking at those tabs more closely now.

Thanks for posting! I changed Jeeps and this one will require those tabs for the baseplate.

That is two failure points I have read about - I guess a periodic inspection of all parts is going to be mandatory.

Looking at your pictures are there cracks starting on the good part at the second hole?

My first thought is that this would probably never had happened if this part had been machined out of solid bar stock.

Off course, it requires much longer time (hence more money) to fabricate parts from solid stock.

WOW! Just read this post and went out and checked ours, as we have the same set-up. No problems, no cracks, under mag check, but ours only has a single set of holes, not the 2 as the OP has. Lubed with chain lube and plugged them back in. Depending on roads, the toad does move around at times. This is really a wake-up call. The last thing anyone wants is to cause injury to anyone else if the toad comes loose, even if you have a sup. brake system. 50/50 of the drivers do not pay attention more than 10 feet in front of their bumper.

You're situation did give me pause because I have a Blue Ox base plate as well, but I noticed in your photos that the failure point is at that smaller second hole that serves no purpose that I'm aware of. I just took a look at my 9 year old tabs, and they do not have that second hole. Hopefully the new tabs they send will be the newer style without the second hole that appears to be the weak point.

I also have a Blue Ox base plate with the same removable tabs. I am absolutely amazed to see this failure. The weight/heft of those tabs is impressive and I see weaker areas that I would have thought would go before one of these.

Thanks for sharing as this is good info to have. It's nice to be able to see the hairline crack in that other one so people know what to look for since it's clearly getting ready to fail too.

I don't have this set up so I'm not familiar with it, but what is that second hole for anyway? I can see the other hole is to put the pin in, but does the hole where it broke get used for? As you can see in your photo, by the time they cut that hole and the slot down the middle, it doesn't leave a lot of metal left for support. But the same is true of the bigger hole that the pin goes through.

Yikes! That's kind of scary. I have the same set up as you. I check the whole unit from time to time, I guess I'll start looking closer. Glad everything turned out ok for you and thank for the heads up. You may have just saved someone an even bigger problem that you had. Thank you!
