Visiting NYC

Planning a trip to NYC I read that there is a campground in NJ that is nice. Thinking of staying i NJ and tacking my tow to NY/Brooklyn. Any recommendations?

We stayed at Liberty this summer. You have closer proximity to lower Manhattan then most New Yorkers. Jeraey city where it's located has become quite trendy. Studio apartments on the block next to the RV park start at $2000/mo. It's only a matter of time it'll be developed. Enjoy while it's still there.

Stayed at Liberty Harbor in 2006. It was very convenient to the subway
(about a 3 block walk) and was tight, but we only needed a place to stay the night. We spent 9 days there and did the U S Open Tennis and a tour of New York City.

There may be others, but this place is ok. When we were there, they had a night watchman in a tower who scared us when we came in one night at 2 AM. Even though it is a little high, I would recommend this place because of the convenience to NYC.

We have stayed @ Liberty Harbour. No problem getting there with 38' RV towed with crew cab dually. Had views of the Statue of Liberty from our site, easy access to NYC. Short walk to restaurants and other amenities from the campground. There's a bar on site and security. Electricity was not a problem for us.
Our fiver is nicer, larger and has far more amenities than any hotel room I can afford in NYC, so @ $90 per night its a no brainer for me.

We have been eyeballing Liberty for a trip east. I'm ok with the notion it is simply a asphalt CG with power & water with a great location. However the reviews about bad electricity make me really pause.

I'm not quite positive, but I think you're asking for more information on Floyd Bennett field parking?

This link is the official National Park Service description of camping there. The reservation system has some information on directions for getting to it. (The obvious route, via the Belt Parkway, does not permit RVs. It's necessary to travel over city streets to drive there.) The cost is $30 per night.

The RV camp sites are slots in a big asphalted area, with a picnic table nearby. The tent sites are more typical campsites with grass and fire rings and so forth but are not open to RVs of any sort. It's apparently rather noisy, partly because JFK airport is not far away. I've never been there myself, but would consider staying there if I were sightseeing in New York and could time my arrival and departure around rush hour traffic.

You're going to be driving through the streets of Brooklyn to get to Floyd Bennett Field. It can be done but it's not something I'd recommend or want to do myself. Liberty Harbor is pricey and no frills, but the location is everything. You are RIGHT THERE. The streets getting to Liberty Harbor are narrow and congested but not as bad as in the city. I've seen every size and type RV in there. Any place else is going to be at least an hour's ride each way.

Another option is the KOA in Newburgh NY Plattekill. You can drive a few miles to Beacon NY and take the train into the city about an hour ride. Or they have a tour bus that will take you into NYC for the day and hits all the spots. It's pricey but well worth it if you consider the train and parking costs parking and stress.

Looked up Liberty Harbor, the rates seem a little steep $90.00, but I do know nothing the Northeasst is inexpensive. I did not understand the Floyd Bennet Field poking. Can someone be more explosive. I have a special needs son and I want to be careful. Thanks

Liberty Harbor works very well. The camping facilities are minimal and it is expensive but the location is great. Nice view of the city and Statue of Liberty. It's a very short walk to the train station (office staff provides details) which takes you to the 9/11 museum in minutes, or on weekdays there is comuter ferry service also into the city (Wall Street area) which is a pleasant ride, if you stay elsewhere, you'll have a very long ride in.

We did NY from conn. and stayed not far from a train station there. The train took us into Grand Central in Manhattan. Can't imagine getting anywhere near the city with the coach or the toad. Won't even go near there on the way out and always swing up towards White Plains and over into NJ for making a wide swing around it all, whether going south on the coast or heading west from that area. Same thing going north and since we're about done with the cities, we stayed on I81 for the most part, for going to RI, this summer. Working our way back south now and by way of WV.

Another possibility is camping at Floyd Bennett Field (in Brooklyn on Jamaica Bay). Getting there with an RV would be a bit of an adventure for sure. Connections to public transportation are not bad, though; a bus that connects to subway stations goes by the park entrance (which is maybe a half mile from the campground).

The RV sites at Floyd Bennett are parking spots with picnic tables--there are no hookups, nor even a dump station from what I can tell.

But I would park Class A and toad and take the train from NJ to Penn Station NYC if you want to tour all of Manhattan. You'll pay $50/day to park at a hotel in Manhattan and you don't want a car to get around either.

If you have a specific place to visit with parking available in NYC, that's different.
