Traeger vs Green Mountain

Think I'm in the market for a pellet grill. (By that I mean I haven't discussed this with the DW yet) Really, really want one, but which. Pretty much got it down to Traeger vs Green Mountain. Want quality, but price is a definite qualifier. Don't want something for the road, home use only. Won't be cooking for competition nor crowds, so a smaller one is fine. Love to smoke stuff on my charcoal Brinkmann, but want something I can set for 6+ hours of smoking without feeding charcoal constantly.
What's your thoughts?

I have the Traeger at home for over 3 yrs now. Use it constantly. Purchased at Costco at a great price. Just got the Green Mountain DavyCrockett for the toy hauler It is a great grill also. The major difference is the Green Mountain will get much hotter to sear steaks. When the Traeger finally goes at home will replace with green mountain. Get yourself a little shopvac just for the grill. Much easier to suck out ashes and keep clean.

Does anybody know if the Davey Crockett is tall enough to do a beer can chicken?

Man that looks good, great job. Here's a link to some rubs you can make, you can adjust the heat and spicyness to your taste.

OK. Smoked a butt. All I can say, to use an over used cliche is, "Holy Smoke!!!" Simply great!

jnharley, mentioned home made rubs. Really want to learn the secrets and get involved in this. DW has an over sensitive pallet and is totally opposed to red pepper, etc. anything "hot". Any starting point to consider for a recipe?

thanks all

Firing her up tomorrow with a pork butt and we'll see how it goes. Found pellets at a local BBQ store and will give them a try. 40# for $20. Better that most prices I've been checking. Have to get this smoker working and then delve into making my own rubs.
I like many of the commercial rubs, but the DW has an strong dislike toward peppers especially red peppers and any or all HOT spices. So I hop to build our own.

Good choice to break it in with, I've got a butt cooking in my mini right now. That's a good find on those pellets. Let us know how it turns out, pics would be nice.

I keep my pellets in heavy duty buckets with rubber gasketed lids in order to keep humidity at bay (especially since I winter in Florida).

I got a 3-pak of 5 gallon food grade buckets with 'life latch' lids for $40 (incl shipping) from Baytec Containers. These folks have more kinds and sizes of buckets then I thought were possible. The 5 gallon bucket holds 20+ pounds of pellets.

The three of them (mesquite, hickory, blend) ride in the front of the bed of my truck, held in place with heavy duty bungies.

We have a GMG Davey Crockett for the RV and love it. We smoke up a bunch of meat and then use a Food Saver to vacuum package the extras. Warmed up, it tastes like it is right off the smoker and great for those long travel days. I make up my own rubs. That way I can control the sugar and salt. I also make up my own BBQ sauce.

Me and 3 friends went in on a one ton pallet of pellets from http://bbqpelletsonline.com/

I got 17 x 40lb bags for about $10 each. Should last me a bit over a year at current cooking rates 🙂

So where's the best deal on pellets?

Try your local sporting goods store or farm store. Sportsmans Warehouse has a very large variety around here. I've even seen them at Costco.

Most cooking pellet brands can be used in any grill, despite what certain manufacturers may tell you. However, do not use heating pellets, but you probably already know that.
