DW just got her new Kindle Paperwhite.
Up till now she has always read paper books, but she decided to get into the tech age. She is as happy as a clam and I may not see here much, until it's charging time, which could be anywhere up to 8 weeks at a shot.

You might say that it is so easy to use that even a DW can do it.
Here wifi connects great for book downloads.

Snowman, you are correct. When you get the Kindle app on any device, you get access to your kindle book account. Also I have had 3 read only kindles and I just add them to the account.
Myself, I prefer using Calibre to manage my books. That way I can get books from other sources other than Amazon. Also, I can indicate which device the book is on and if I have read the book.
Unlike some others, I like keeping my books forever and as I get older, I can reread them.

Huh!!:h
Don't they know people have been reading books in bed for years using small lights.
Don't you love these so called experts who go out of their way to find problems in life.

You don't need to worry about the value of the books. They are in your account at Amazon. If you lose your Kindle and buy a new one, you would log in with your new one and reload your purchased books. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the way the Nook works with Barnes & Noble, and the way Android apps work with phones.
Currently RV-less but not done yet.

So much good useful info by everybody, thanks!

I love my early version kindle, the battery is long lasting and charges fast. Not being connected to the web helps prolong battery life. How great is it to increase the size of the print? Having a wide variety of reading material in hand suitable for any mood is a thrill.

I have two problem about an otherwise wonderful device. One, the light, although dimmed, is reputed to hamper the brain's melatonin production, a potential problem for bedtime readers that can delay sleep. Look for an ability in the future for e-readers to offer the ability to vary the type of lighting, like the Phillips Hue bulb.
Second problem? I need to insure the dang thing with all the books on it!

I doubt retina changes the reading outdoors issue. For the mini iPad the thing that might sway me is whether I can read the print replica subscription I use on the road to read my hometown newspaper, the Minneapolis Star Tribune. On my iPhone accessing through the Safari browser I really can't read the replica as is (print replica image) but can easily on my full-size iPad. However, by tapping on an article one can bring up a readable and scrollable alternative. Here are iPhone examples.

Today's front page

Lead article clicked on to read

Even though the paper also has a more conventional news website it can be harder to navigate (but easier to search) and you don't know the editorial context of their news like is a story page 1 or buried inside. The replica also gives you a sense of being home complete with all the ads and a lot of news and information that doesn't make the regular website like the page for where movies are playing and even the comics.

I can tell you from first hand experience. I have the latest Ipad (until Nov 1.)
The Ipad with Retina is still very hard to read while outside. Since we are leaving for the south, I am changing all my books over to my Kindle. At home we have a porch so I don't do much reading outside while here.
I have the latest Ipad (until Nov 1.) I don't see reason why the new one will be any different. It's main features are lighter and faster processor.

Does the retina display make it easier to see in the sunlight, or are they mainly indoor devices?

The new iPads just announced will be even better ebook readers. The full-size iPad was reduced down to just one pound (from 1.4) and the Mini iPad got retina display.

I have a number of e-readers, a Nook HD, an iPad, a Kindle Keyboard, and several smartphones.

After eyestrain issues, I'm probably going to take the time and upgrade my Kindle Keyboard to the latest OS, then use Calibre to shovel all my e-book titles (the ones that are not DRM-ed) onto it. Otherwise, I'd just use the iPad since it is a great all in one unit.

Yes, the problem with my Kindle is that it's a durable little stinker. I'd like to get a newer model, too, but not until this one dies. 399 ebooks down, don't know how many to go on it.

Free Kindle eBooks. I get many from Amazon, notified daily from Bookbub. I also get alot (free & inexpensive) from Smashwords. My Kindle has more books than I have years left to read. I wish I could trade in my Kindle for a paperwhite.

I like to read, but am slow to change to the Kindle style of ereader. My Granddaughter has a Kindle and loves it. I am seriously thinking of buying a Kindle..just slow in making the change. What is it that you like about the ereaders and what type is your favorite?

For me, I had a Kindle 3, and when it got broke after 2 years, I just got a new Kindle Paperwhite. I love the fact that I can and do "carry" 200 books around with me at any given time and it only weights 12oz or whatever it is. Next to nothing. I get an email daily with deals on books from $2.99 down to free, and if something looks interesting, I buy it and load it for when I finish my current book. I got the new one on Oct. 2nd, and have already finished three books, and am most of the way through number four. As noted above, my battery is not even close to lasting 8 weeks, but that's ok, I still get more an a reasonable amount of reading in between charges.

Oh, Snap!! Thought my Nook tablet had died last evening. As I use it every day, that would be all the reason I need to get a new NOOK 9" HD+ with the bigger screen and faster cpu. My table screen went off, none of the buttons worked, it had a faint blue glow to the screen, and would not power down to restart> OK, Jackpot! made plans to go get the new one Today!! Got up this morning, the screen was black, so I plugged in power cord, amd got a message "bATTERY TOO LOW TO POWER UP". Left it plugged in for a bit, it came back up just fine, exactly on the page I was reading. So much for that one, guess I will wait and see if a better one comes out before I get to shop again.
