when they come out with a stand alone gps that shows your route like this google image then we would have a great gps unit. what would it take for memory to hold satellite mapping of the usa a terabyte?

It's nice to have that image available and it is useful info. However that image will not guide my Combo to the CG as well as my dedicated Garmin GPS.
Never trust any GPS 100%. Use Google maps and paper maps to become familiar with your journey.
Google maps alone can cause just as much chaos as a GPS alone

Has anyone yet tried the RV 770 LMT-S?
I'm interested in it as a replacement for Street Atlas. I like the idea that the 770 is compatible with BaseCamp, so I can lay out the day's driving in detail on a laptop and then download to the 770. A plus is that there is a Mac version of BaseCamp, so I wouldn't have to mess with Parallels and Windows any more. Of course, if it doesn't work well, then buying it is a no-go.

DW got me a Garmin RV 660 for Christmas. In RV mode it routes you on a longer trip for the sake of keeping you on a 4-lane highway longer. I'll use it, but will also use GS's trip planner and Google maps for pre-trip planning.

A GPS should be used for amusement purposes only. They will steer you in the wrong direction on occasion and the results won't be pretty.

I use the GPSr to assist in what lane to be in when transferring from one freeway to another or at exits with multiple exit lanes. They are also good if you are a geocacher in a new city.

I don't use my various GPS'S to get there. I only use them to give me a basic route. While driving I use my eyes for navigation. I never have problems with low bridges, or dead end streets using this method.

If you have to rely totally on your GPS to navigate it means that you're not doing the due diligence required up front before you leave.

I have the 760 and it's great, glad to see they have released the sequel. Google maps (which I use also) is great too, but is only effective if you have a signal, or have previously downloaded an area.

The point being that you should not buy any Garmin when Google Maps and WAZE will get you their faster and more accurately. Every Garmin (every GPS) is out-of-date on the release date and will always be 1-2 years behind what's really happening out there due to the delay between updates.

Google Maps is a very useful app. However it is the anti RV app once you get close to your destination. Google maps generally takes you the most direct way. Google Maps does not know or care that you are in a large RV. It will quickly take you down a tiny street if it thinks that is the shortest way.
I've had my 760 LMT for 4 years now? And it still works like a champ. If its 2 years behind I have yet to notice. What I have noticed is that in RV mode it keeps me on large streets and avoids the tiny ones.
At the end of the day both Garmin and Google maps have their pros and cons. Knowing when to choose one over the other is the key to success. When traveling in an RV in an unfamiliar area the Garmin 760 TV is a better option than Google maps.
Furthermore have you ever experienced what happens when you are closely following Google maps guidance and the phone rings!
Suddenly you have no GPS. Garmin is dedicated and does not have that issue.

That's fine driving around Los Angeles and New York. When you haven't had cell service or WiFi in days, those apps are as worthless as you claim the Garmin is.

What I post is my 2 cents and nothing more. Please don't read anything into my post that's not there. If you disagree, that's OK.
Can't we all just get along?
