Looking for an all in one computer with 23" screen, WIFI capable with an SSD hard drive. Don't need a super rig don't play games. Old one just old and slow like me. Kinda like the look of Dell models. Would like to stay under $1500. Looked at many but can't seem to zero in on one. Guess we'll have to go with 8.1. Would appreciate any recommendations.

If you already have a HDMI monitor or TV you could use the Asus or HP Chromebox and not worry about viruses or malware.

Have you looked at LG Chromebase? Mostly just a web browser. Documents mostly need to be on the cloud. Can add a USB hard drive.

Read some reviews if you might want a simpler device for email and internet.

i just got a new Asus Laptop with Win 8.1 and a touchscreen in addition to the usual keyboard/mouse which then downloaded to the new OS version "8.1 Update". There are many sites online that will tell you how to have the computer boot right to Desktop and bypass the pita password screen. There is no need for any add on launcher or software to get the desktop to now work like 7. If you look at the lower half of the app screen - now called start it is very much like the old start menu. Just ignore or delete the Windows Apps and leave the software you want or install.

There are still things about Win 8, 8.1, or 8.1 Updt that are confusing and just ridiculous but it is manageable. If one can wait until August for the release of Win 10 it brings back the original start menu and goes back to pretty much Win 7 with added features.

You can get a Toshiba loaded with 7 and comes with 8 and 8.1 upgrade CD if you so desire to use it.

If you end up with Windows 8.0, and don't like the interface, check out Classic Shell You can chose from XP, Vista, Windows 7, and switch between them.
ClassicShell does't allow you to switch between operating systems - it givs you features in W8 like the start button where you can configure it to look like XP or W7. Here is a better link for it

Sorry but that ridiculous statement simply does NOT compute. :S

Having a Mac has nothing to do with what others own. I have never met anyone with a Mac that would ever go back to a PC. If you like spending big bucks on BS security software (since your PC is under constant attack), enjoy your vulnerability. Yep, all computers compute but some (like the Mac's), don't come with a bullseye on their back.

:R

I would rather go without a laptop if I couldn't have a Mac. My 2007 15 in. Macbook Pro is still going strong (my son has it now). I have the 13 in. Macbook Pro and I really like the size compared to my 15 in. I still see the same and it's not so heavy.

Hey Captain, nothing I said was directed at anyone other than the OP.
The few of the seniors that I support cannot have 'conversations' with their computing peers only because there are fewer of them with experiences they need.

They often (as do younger people) have a mouse click or two to cause them damage or PC behavioural issues. How & who can support them becomes a 'resource availability issue'. Not a brand issue.

The OP did mention the older age, bigger monitor & SSD. I think I addressed them with sufficient clarity to offer a 'one person opinion'.

ps....... I am virus free and have never paid for a virus scanner in my 42 years of computing. Guess that depends mostly where you go and what you do.
