A peeve of mine.

Driving on two lane roads with our classC,
I make it a habit to pull over if I get five or six vehicles behind me.

It is very rare, almost never happens, that drivers whom I went out of my way to help,
ever toot their horn or wave.

Strange that the truckers have time to blink their clearance lights
when you signal that it is OK to cut back in,
others, I guess are too self important
to indulge in a simple courtesy!

That would be rare in my travels other than interstates with slow moving vehicle lanes… there are times where I would like to be able to move over to allow traffic to pass but in order to do so I would have to pull into a big box parking lot and navigate that to get back on the road to continue my journey…

I will do what I can safely and reasonably to accommodate others but, I am not going to do that and arrive at my destination in even a reasonable time, just to accommodate what are for the most part people that are driving above the speed limit with poor planning skills for their own commute (poor planning on their part does not create an emergency on my part)…

Out here in the Peoples Republic Of Kalifornia on winding/twisting two lane roads there are lots of marked "turn outs". There are other areas that are safe to pull over. When I say pull over, I mean COMPLETELY out of the lane. I typically stop once I am in the "turn out" lane, but not always if it is long enough. If I cannot pull COMPLETELY out of the lane I wait until I can.

The law reads that you must pull over when safe to do so. Signage directs you to pull over at the first available "turn out".

Well I don’t see many opportunities on the 2 lane roads I drive to safely pull over, and when I do see someone do it they usually slow down (sometimes almost to a stop) and damn near cause an accident in the following vehicles… then the following vehicles and/or new approaching vehicles speed up to prevent the vehicle that pulled over from safely reentering the cart way…

The act of pulling over, no matter how noble is a generally dangerous move in most places… traveling the speed limit on a berm isn’t exactly safe either, littered with debris that can damage the vehicle doing so…

Where are all of these pullover lanes anyway??? Outside of areas where there is a lot of high load high use vehicles I don’t see the traffic engineers designing and installing them…

If I can’t pull over safely, I will take my chances with the impeding ticket before I endanger myself or anyone else…

In the country, I see trucks and vehicles pulling over. I do it all the time with the two lane, full shoulder roads, since I'm usually going the speed limit (and would rather just let someone zoom by.) However, get near any city... that behavior completely disappears, replaced by the middle finger.

In all my years of driving around the midwest here, including some 2-lane roads, I've never actually seen any RV pull over for cars/trucks to pass. If I do ever see it happen, I honestly might think that they're just pulling over for some personal reasons, and I slowly pass them by and go about my business; because of the rarity of it happening, I doubt I'd think to wave "thank you." When pulling our HTT, I drive at least the speed limit on 2-lane roads as a courtesy to those behind me. Anyone who wants to break the speed limit can pass when the opportunity presents itself, and I'll let off the accelerator to let them pass. So it's not that most drivers are rude...Around here, you just don't know why someone is pulling over, so you mind your own business unless you see obvious distress and are a good samaritan...

I always wave at the log trucks or the RV's that pull over. But unless my window is open and my arm is long, I'm sure that they can't see my positive thank you gesture.

I get to be the engine of the train sommetimes though I don't consider myself to be a slow dawdler. As a rule I won't do cars any special favours. They have the hp to get up & go around where the chance presents itself. If they don't, well, stay back there.

Trucks get a break. When an overtaking chance comes up Ill get over so he can see & slow abit when he makes his passing move. Sometimes you get a blink of appreciation. Sometimes not. It seems to be a regional thing with mid western & mountain state truckers much more appreciative than eastern truckers.

What really irritates me is when there is a passing lane on an uphill. No, I am not slowing down & losing my momentum to let everyone pass. What gets me are the ones who slowly pass preventing everyone else a chance from getting by before the passing lane ends. Pure thoughtlessness for anyone behind them.

I think waiting until there are 5 or more vehicles is way to long. More than 5 will get you a ticket out here if caught. When traveling less that the speed limit, or 25 mph or less regardless of the speed limit, I pull over whenever there is a vehicle behind me. I've had many "beeps" of appreciation.

Yup, and even though you have pulled over the line of cars behind you now has to pay more attention to make sure they can safely pass you without running into one another. So everyone must quickly wake up and concentrate. By the time they realize that you were just being nice they are way ahead of you and accelerating away.

Also, with the modern vehicles that I have with the air bag in the wheel, it's hard to bump the horn button lightly. Every time I try to beep it comes our sounding like a angry burst.

Considering that it is us... the RV owners... that are piling up the cars behind us, then to other drivers we are the ones that are a PIA. Whether we pull over or not, we have held them up so I could care less if someone waves or blinks their lights.

I think a lot of the OTR trucks are now on recording management systems and may not wish to be flipping lights on and off. There may be some confusion when their logs are inspected. I don't know this for certain but some of these data recording systems are pretty sophisticated.

The way I look at is drive the posted speed limit or be willing to move for others.
