Audio Books

When we have a long day on the road we like to listen to books on CD. We pick them up at used book stores, but they can still be pricey. We have a bunch (mostly mysteries) we have heard a couple of times. If anyone is interested in exchanging some with us through the mail, send me a PM.

Safe travels.

In all my years of driving, I've only listened to one audio book. I was driving the interstate through Tennessee and was so involved in the story that I missed my exit and went 50 miles out of my way before I realized it. That was my last audio book.

I started using audio books to KEEP me awake! :W

We caravan pretty long distances to sporting events and I was the 'only' one getting tired and asking to pull over to rest. Which really irritated them.

To my surprise I found out ALL the other RV'er's where listening to audio books mostly mysteries which kept them from getting tired from the long monotonous driving!

They all had a huge library they carried with them.
Each one gave me a CD to listen to and they never got another call from me to pull over.

Oh dear! No offense was intended. Simply trying to be helpful. From your comments you sound like you're very uncomfortable with technology, like many RVers are. Nothing to be ashamed about if that's true.

Not for the original poster but others that don't mind computer downloads. I have gotten some good books off http://podiobooks.com/ if you like the book you can make a donation. I also subscribe to a bunch of pod casts some are serial books others are short standalone shows that I stack up.

I'm starting to switch over from MP3 Cds to thumb drives know that I have a radio that does both. Working out a system to find things when you may have a dozen or more books on one thumb drive is still under refinement.

On my I phone, and probably any other Apple Communication product or SMART phone, I have both Books that I read, and Books that are read to me. There are both FREE and PAY A FEE apps.

Incidentally, Home Depot had a Christmas sale on Bluetooth Shower speakers (with suction cups that will stick to your windows), for improved sound $9.99.

I don't do many audio books now, as I am not driving as much as I used to. Back when I was driving 60 miles each way to work, Audio books are what kept me from going insane! Now, I do mostly e-books, because if I sit down to listen to book, I tend to go to sleep and miss most of the book! We did a long drive in the toad recently, and really enjoyed a book that we listened to all the way.

As for using Overdrive from the library, it is very simple to use. I get books on my two NOOKs, my smartphone, and my desktop occasionally. Wireless Download to a nook, tablet, or smartphone is just a mouse click or screen tap. And they download very fast!

I have been a subscriber to Audible for may years and I love it. No, it is not free and you can go to local libraries and check out many audio books. But I love being able to download audio books to my iPod and listen to them on trips. I changed out the radio in my RV to one that had an aux port so I could plug the iPod into it and listen to the books. It sure makes the miles go quicker and we have listened to some great stories and learned a lot.

My job requires extensive driving and I enjoy listening to audiobooks. When traveling with our fiver and listening to them, they put DW to sleep. Hmmm, come to think of it, I better go check out a few more at the library.

Here's a thought. Find any high school student, pay them a few bucks to show you how to download books from the internet and play them. Have them take you through it slowly so you can write down all the steps ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you all for your replies. We mainly travel in the West, so not too many Cracker Barrels, but good info when we head east. We do the Goodwill/ thrift store/ library shopping but pickings here are slim for the type of books we enjoy. We will look at the online options, but that is not really our "thing". We are old school, just have all these CD's that we would like to trade with someone.

Thanks again for the time you took to reply. Lots of good ideas.
